Oximation weirdness
« on: September 28, 2011, 02:51:42 PM »
So you may know I have a bunch of freebased hydroxylamine to play with. One thing I decided to try was taking 80ml of water and dissolving as much freebase in it as I could then dripping this in to a solution of 60gms of an aldehyde and 80ml of ethanol. Almost immediately the solution turned brown. But, about 5 minutes later after continuing to drip it in the flask looked like a snow globe. Oxime was forming faster than I have ever seen it form and whiter than snow. Yet the solution it's self gradually got browner and browner.

Anybody have any idea why the shit turned brown? It doesn't seem to have hurt anything, it's just brown.

I may have gotten to the bottom of this one. I think the oil had gone bad. I know we had some tlc'd and apparently it did not degrade, but I think this did. It was the last few hundred ml in a kilo bottle. It was taken from the fridge and stored in a closet for about a month. With all that head space it musta funked it up. I just opened a brand new bottle to try just to make sure, and sure enough, no brown.

Edit: And I was wrong about didn't hurt anything. The oxime that comes from this oil does not behave the way you expect. It's useless as far as I can tell.

Burn it on foil, popping/decomposing = oxime
