EPHEDRA HERB EXTRACTION QUESTIONS?????

SO SWIM PLANS TO FOLLOW THE HERB TO HONEY METHOD AND Swim has a few questions about it.......but first heres the extraction...

Let's start with the preparation
of the alkaline aqueous solution for the extraction.
For the extraction of 200g ephedra
(which is said to contain 10% alkaloids)
there has been prepared a solution of 1200-1250ml water
which contain:

* 180g NaOH p.a.
*60-70g Na2CO3
* 100-120g NaCl

The following pictures
show the preparation of this solution
on the hotplate with good magnetic stirring:

To this solution 200g of herbal ephedra extract have been added
in smaller portions under magnetic stirring.
Of course, after the aqueous solution has cleared up:

This mixture has been stirred
untill it cooled down to room temperature
while a seperatory funnel of appropriate size has been setted up:

Afterwards the ugly mixture
has been transfered into the seperatory funnel
and 250ml of TCM aka chloroform has been added.

So my first Question is how long does swim keep it stirring...

Second Q) while stiring does one need to heat it up and if so how hot..
or is
it all just added and stirred till it reaches room temp...

I vaguely recall my father, who introduced me to the amp lab at age 11 (wow, 20 odd years ago already!), having several rubbermaid storage containers of herb soaking in base. I asked him recently whatever went down with his efforts and he was less than happy about it. I suppose he was ahead of his time and short of ambition.  :P

10% of alkaloids? Is it intially an extract or concentrate of it? I don't think any plant contains 10% of an alkaloid in the foliage.

Also please review the rules.. we're not really to much into the use of SWIM - there are better ways to describe the process being discussed. The title of this thread is a bit intense too... no need for caps and multiple question marks :)


Other than that, can't really offer much advice.


It probably would not hurt to heat it up to aid in the extraction of the alkaloids from the ephedra -- but if the ephedra is already an extract it probably does not matter much. Might also want to defat it?

Sorry but I didnt post the whole article, just wanted to get the info that was important...

and the ephedra herb cut and sifted, and it says contains XXX% of the alkaloids....here is the write up.....but the herb he has and i have may be different... 

If you look at the picks hes heating it up and stiring so i was wondering what you all thought.

Last I was looking, suppliers in China were offering sinica ethanolic extract of some 20% or more. Something like $30/L.

Herb for much less.

Lugh one HAS to be a member of that site to read the links you've posted here, and a few other threads, is there a way around this, or does the result come from the effort applied, like joining?

sorry, not sure I understand.....

IIRC there was some "required rave" about ones intent/experience which I rote, but as with too many bits and bytes, got lost somewhere in cyberspace, (whats new?) due to a intermittent/spasmodic wireless connection....ugh!

i haven't had much luck with ephedra extractions either.
5kg of herb from china, probably the alk % was too low.
yield was pretty disappointing.

man! your customs/quarantine sounds cushy! :P

 One has HUGE dramas getting "plant material" onto this island. >:( although its with good reason, (well, except for lantana,  and cane toads, and...aaw forget it!)
 so only my extraction desires are occaisionally thwarted, oh I forgot the camphors,
    lovely smelly 'camphora cinnanomums' 30mts HIGH ;D

nah, its not the dumb factor, its the low income and low standard of living corruption factor, really.

every chem house i've been to, i'm friends with the guys and i am sure they all know what i need the shit i'm buying for, but they have interest in that, cause they know i'll be coming back.

especially here in the province, where they barely make a living. they'd go through/call all the warehouses in the country to supply me with whatever i need. and they sometimes even hint/wink me with tips and tricks. lol.
the local chemhouse, i often go there and leave them a bottle of something as a present of gratitude.

No we should not move this to the den, it should be in drug synthesis and extraction.

What should be done is we should stay on topic, stop with useless post, and accomplish something other then talking as though we where a bunch of drunks in a mother fucking pub for a fucking change because the direction the forum is taking lately is quite honestly pissing me, and many of our well respected members off and if people don't shut the hell up and experiment or leave then you can bet your ass that this forums days are numbered.

Is this clear enough for everyone because I for one don't want to see Vesp decide its not worth the money, time, and effort he puts out to keep this place afloat to have it full of nothing but drugged out fools who are more interested in there nearest high then there nearest chemistry shop.

What is the use of the Sodium Carbonate here after the addition of NaOH? Is it there to act as a buffer or is it the result of a lack of understanding in the original writeup? This is one of the reasons I hate rehashed of old write ups. It seems to similar to that old game kids play where they sit in a circle and pass a sentence around by whispering in each others ears, then as a big joke they all laugh about how stupid the end result sounds as slowly but surely the original sentence got turned into something else. 

JKL, I would like to see all the logic behind your herb to honey extraction, not someone elses experiment but the reasons YOU are using each and every material in the process. That way when I ask why there is sodium carbonate you will be able to tell be because I'm pretty sure few could tell me why it is there.
