almost birthday cake time 8P
« on: December 09, 2011, 05:27:51 PM »
nigluhS bumped into this homeless guy outside of his building. He told himthis story, and nigluhS thought "damn, this could get posted at the vesp" ; )...nigluhS knows nothing of this stuff....

basic simple PF TEK dream.

-Holmes (homeless dood)  and the kiddos(he says they LOVE to help) mix up aprox. 2/3 cup verm, aprox 1/3 cup brown rice flower, and little less than a 1/3 cup H2O per jar.
-Stick em in the canning pot (with some extra weight on the lid) and steam for aprox 3 hours. Let sit overnight (or 7 hours; basically cool to room temp).
-Inoculate with one's favorite spores. If nigluhS can recall his story correctly ; ), Holmes says he keeps the jars on an open oven rack set to 175. Maybe overkill, but it will keep any airborn contaminants from messing with one's inoculation. Also, maybe overkill, but Holmes said he sterilizes the inoculation needle b/w each jars innoculation.
-Store for 2-3 weeks maintaining temp at close to 70 F, out of light. (Holmes said he uses his platic containers that will become "terreriums" soon, and covers them with a blanket).

Can you believe that Holmes had a jump drive with some pics for nigluhS to post. Rarely will one run across such tech savy homeless folk ; )
He said these were some golden teachers, and jalisco's were a couple weeks behind. With two other fine fugus strains following in suit.

nigluhS will track down Holmes so we can do a follow up post on the birthday cake part. Of course all this can be extensively research on net/shroomery (search PF TEK), Holmes tell me. Again, nigluhS know nothing.

Question for OoBYCoO (or any other mycology buffs). Can Holmes use his PF TEK mycelia to colonize your (OoBYCoO's) Tub TEK?

Cheers!!!

You can definitely use PF-style cakes to colonize a larger bulk substrate; I've done so with very solid results (with non-psychoactive, edible mushrooms of course ;D )

With PF jars, you'll probably want to use a narrower ratio of bulk substrate to spawn substrate (your finished jars) than you would for say, colonized rye.  If you were using rye or bird seed as your spawn you could easily go with a 10:1 bulk substrate:spawn ratio and achieve great results - not that you can't use that high of a ratio when spawning from PF jars; you'll just probably see better results working with a smaller amt of bulk substrate (especially if it's your first time working with bulk; not that it's difficult, but all things come with a lil practice, ya dig?)

Anywhoo, keep in mind that there is a mildly greater potential for contracting contaminants using this method than following just the PF tek, but follow basic clean precautions you've no doubt learned at the shroomery and you'll be just gravy.

So go ahead and prepare your bulk substrate and tub enclosure according to which ever standard or practice you are following, and collect several brand new, unopened ziploc-style sandwich bags.  Follow all clean-room procedures (i.e., as tho you were about to inncoulate a fresh jar) from here on out; I don't need to repeat them, you obviously have the hang of what you're doing or you wouldn't have gotten to birth-day already  8)

Take one bag and have it ready at hand - good practice will be to attempt to absolutely minimize the amount of time the ziploc is open while simultaneously birthing the colonized cake directly into said bag and immediately sealing.  You may now (gently) break the cake apart between your fingers, being careful not to puncture or open the bag in the process; try to break the cake up into roughly US quarter-sized nuggets, and not much bigger.  It probably doesn't matter at all whether you choose to break down all the cakes you plan on using into one large bag or do them one at a time in individual bags, just be sure to check all cakes very carefully for signs of contaminants before combining them and ruining your whole batch.

Once the cakes are all broken up, they may now be mixed in with the bulk substrate.  What worked for me was to add about 4/5 of the total UN-innoculated bulk substrate to the tub (case underneath if you so desire), then spread the crumbled cakes throughout the top layer, adding the remaining 1/5 of bulk substrate last to mix in with and cover the colonized cakes.  You may now close up & begin to incubate your bulk substrate while it completes it's spawn run, and case thereafter (or not) if you so desire.

Tried to keep my explanation as brief as possible, but at times these sorts of descriptions lend themselves to more words than should seem necessary.

Congrats on birthin' them babbies there tho bud; its a mighty nice feeling aint it?  ;D ;D
And the boy's father was shouting:

"He doin' the stanky leg! He doin' the stanky leg! Two yearz ol' an' he doin' the stanky leg an' he NOT EVEN TRIPPIN'!!"

The infant was, in fact, doing 'the stanky leg.'

Believe me boy, I seen everything.

many thanks poorfish...I actually prefer lengthy responses ; )

Another question if I may...I have some cakes that never started pinning. After birthing them, they don't seem to be pinning either. Can I initiate pinning somehow?
I obviously have some homework to do, but thanks none the less. I really appreciate it.

They are looking good. :)
Good job.

Going to try bigger grows in the future via other methods?

I hadn't devled back into any mycology for 3 or 4 years now.
My (re)new found interest in chemistry spurred me into wanting to attempt extracting the "goods" from the fungus.
I am interesed in the casing methode b/c I have never had success with it. Failure never rests well with me.
But no real need for scaling up outside of curiousity about the process.

thanks...
