"Clearance delays"
« Reply #20 on: April 23, 2012, 11:18:50 PM »
Ab2 has on two occasions had stuff undergo "clearance delays" at customs. In both cases it was because the chem company shipping the stuff labeled it with bogus or non-descriptive names. In both cases the stuff was sent to a customs lab and sat there for several weeks each time. Each time when Ab2 called about them to follow up she was asked what they contained, to which Ab2 answered honestly, implying the labeling had been a mistake of the shipper. In both cases after getting cleared by the lab the packages were delivered without incident.

The first time was over 10 years ago, a kg of 2,5 dimethoxybenzaldehyde  8). Here the shipper didn't even put a product name, choose to label it as an "additive", but in bad handwriting so the custms person thought that it said "addictive" ::)

The other time caused more sleepless nights than Ab2 cares to remember, nuff said.

Moral of the story, real businesses label their consignments properly AND have proper documentation, CoA's etc.

With that experience, would you recommend getting 'the company' to preform extra quality testing and attach additional data to the usual documentation, or just use minimal labeling?
In other words, is going the extra mile on documentation worth it? - Does it change how they view any particular shipment, other than having it go through their system smoothly and not raise any red flags.

Don't think you need extra testing, most reputable outfits will have a CoA available, and as long as it matches the label and the bill of lading it will smooth the process. In fact if you go through the websites of different customs departments, this information will also be provided there. Apparently the biggest cause of customs clearance delays in sketchy or non-descriptive labeling.

Just google "clearance delay" ...

How much money have you guys burned by sending it overseas to new suppliers to try out?  Thats a rhetorical question of course, but is there somewhere you guys read legit feedback about companies?  Being so easy to setup websites these days it just seems like a first time customer would be destined to get hosed, no?

In my very limited experience with ordinary products like chinese gin  ::) , doing some solid background research on the business and checking business registries ( like how we americans use the BBB ) will filter down scams to a bare minimum.
As far as feedback goes, most good companies IME will have okay to very good sites that you can't navigate at all - because it won't translate properly & they won't have a useful search function -But will have a catalog hidden away somewhere as a download.
There are always review sites, but until they become mainstream you won't find them easily, and at that point they usually won't be useful to people working in this chemical field.

Thanks antibody2 for that byte of info, I have seen the customs site before and read through most of it, however it was exceptionally boring to filter down the information to what was being sought out.

@anyname - Have never been burned outright, but one time when the chem supply didn't want to label something(aniline) properly because of hazmat shipping headaches, they instead labeled it as 1,4 butandiol, which happens to be a scheduled precursor where Ab2 is from. Had that package been opened it would have caused a lot of headaches.

There are some rip off sites out there, but they are pretty easy to spot, like when every link you click on opens a new browser window (a sure sign it was put together by an amateur/con). Also if you see a company selling "phenylacetone", guaranteed its a scam, no one sells phenylacetone anymore (maybe 12-15 yrs ago but not today), also sites that sell nothing but precursors are good places to avoid.

that's great to hear you're doing well  8)  (and fresh wishes he could say the same :'()  and he hopes it stays that way for you (and ALL wasps  :P)

Your tales also gives hope to those currently tiptoing around waiting for a 'knock' from hopefully, the Postman..the REAL Postman doing their usual high standard of UNcontrolled deliveries :o

yes very good advice AB  8)
I guess there will always be people dumb enough to try and enjoy the (apparently) easy way to (cheap? ???)   precursors  "whats too good to be true like"  ::)

A bit like the "United Nuclear" type places/sites where you can order "anything and everything" from PE to Uranium  :o
Makes me wonder just how many place a) how many suppliers like this are fronts for LEO?  :-\   b) how many idiots try to use them  :o

I also wonder how many people each year in somewhere like the US get busted doing stupid shit like trying to order PA in this day and age?
I'm sure there's plenty of greedy bastards out there who see ClanChem as a way to make money BUT the days of 'shake n bake' clan chem are rapidly fading and the 'other' easier paths to 'fun recreational chemicals' imo are not really so 'easy'

How long do these fools last?  It surely cant be long if they are stupid enough not to know better about trying to buy precursors like PAA :o

Like you (Ab2)  said in another thread, the 'personal requirements' for playing the Clanchem game, and those needed to even do this gig on a small scale are substantial.

Just the commitment and application needed to even start a fairly 'simple' synth  suggest those involved are capable of logical thoughts . . . but that said, I guess whether they apply that logic, is another thing altogether!

And there's a even a (slightly esoteric) word to describe these  astonishing "lapses in logic" by some (of even the smarter wasps)..........Strike!   :o

To bring this thread somewhat back on topic ( omfg no, not by fresh!)  :o

As you'd know, LE today has some very sophisticated software and other methods for checking out the legitimacy of any business

I have my doubts that a 'front' company which isnt actually  'producing' something to sell, would hold up under even mild scrutiny.

IMO this avenue of access is no longer a viable method of acquisition for the home chemist in most first world countries

As you say, maybe 10-15 years ago, but for any large amounts of precursors but certainly not now!

Think he was talking to me man...  :o

Thanks for the response.  I've found a few fairly trustworthy looking websites but I guess my balls are a little too small to feel comfy trying to work something out with these people for now.  Sure would make life easier though...

@ fresh - It was sad day when Strike went down. Although in fairness, the internet was a lot like the wild west back in the late 90’s. What really did him in was when 60 mintes did the documentary on him the Hive and his book Total Synthesis. They also embarrssed a few sassafras oil dealers in the episode. They did their homework and tracked down the ownership of the front company he was using Panda publishing (or some such) and then sprung it on him in the middle of e TV interview after he had just denied any knowledge of it. To give him credit though, once the game was up, he didn't persist with the pointless denials which Ab2 though was pretty cool headed of him. He went down with dignity. Ab2 still remembers the day he posted on the Hive that he had been raided and that ALL his records were now in the had of the DEA. There were a lot of freaked out bees about then ...

@ anyname - that means you're human. Ab2 get herself tied in knots for days working up the "balls" to make place some orders, especially from a new supplier. Its hard. But after a few times you kinda get the hang of it, are able to hold up your end of a conversation with your chem dealer, maybe even chit chat with them about things completely unrelated, like how their kids are doing in school, politics sports etc. After a while they know you so well, that the order part of your call is the formality to get out of the way so the two of you can catch up with each other. Get to know them, they are people too.

Some bonehead students in Arizona led by the infamous Phas3d were the ones who filmed their mdma fueled sexploits which infuriated the puritanical powers that be in Flagstaff   ::) It was NBC's Dateline that aired the documentary that was called the X Files that exposed Strike  :-X He was prosecuted for conspiracy with his customers that were members of the website :'(  Spitball got arrested at that time, which was another blow to say the least  >:(  Registrations had to be shut down for many months since the television coverage made the Hive much more widely known  :P  Other journalists started nosing around, but they were diverted from learning anymore  :o  Strike is out of prison but can't communicate with the electronic tribe he created for fear of violating his parole  8)

If you don't mind me asking, does 'Strike' have to use a windows computer to avoid the possibility that he would just circumvent the rules of his parole and likely not be caught for doing so?

facepalm ::)  sorry mate ... I thought it was some reference to a name change...I didnt see yours :o

But hey anyway ANWD welcome  :D  and as AB2 says, your fear makes you human, and if you start slowly, with more benign things like GAA for example you might be able to develop the type of rapport AB2 talks of 8)

fresh has an amigo who does this masterfully saving fresh's balls from the stress tests mentioned  ;)

yeah I hear you, although I don't think I can recall many 'chicks' using "balls" as a metaphor for courage, or in fact in any way :o

But what ever gender you feel like being friend...after all the great work you have shared with the world fresh doesnt care if you create an entirely 'new' sex JUST for AntiBodies2  ;) ;D 8)  thanx again from me personally (and if you ARE a grrrl  :-*)

I saw that Dateline story last year and what REALLY surprised me was the wholesale business he had basically supplying (I guess) many of his books readers  :o

That was just one of the things he did which IIRC seemed to go against much of the advice he gives in the book about sourcing ???
Even the 'bees' in the office were a little too obvious a 'connection' to the Hive (certainly for my liking :o)

Hey Lugh, do you think this was one of the main reasons for them doing this story on him/the Hive in the first place?

The reporters seemed to know much more about him and his activities than they were letting on during that interview

I wonder if he's allowed a computer but just not allowed online, they could monitor everything he did/does though... which I imagine they would do, and if he can have a smart phone unless they did monitor him, whats to stop him going online?
