Private Prison Company to Demand 90% Occupancy

The nation’s largest private prison company is offering cash-strapped state governments to buy up their penitentiaries and manage convicted criminals at a cost-savings. But there’s a catch…the states must guarantee that are there are enough prisoners to ensure that the venture is profitable to the company.

Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has reached out to 48 states as part of a $250 million plan to own existing prisons and manage their operations. But in return CCA wants a 20-year contract and assurances that the state will keep the prisons at least 90% full.

In the past CCA has operated its own prisons and contracted with states to house inmates. But until now the company never offered to essentially take over public corrections systems.

Ohio already has sold one of its largest prisons to CCA. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal wanted last year to sell three of his state’s prisons to the company, but the legislature refused to go along.

Critics of the plan warn that if states commit to CCA’s deal, they could find themselves with little bargaining power down the road once it comes time to negotiate new contracts. And, if the crime rate continues dropping, will police, prosecutors and judges feel compelled to supply human “product” for the prisons anyway?
-Noel Brinkerhoff, David Wallechinsky
Alimentary, dear Watson; I had a gut feeling.

will they? FFS they ALREADY DO!

shit! we shouldnt have the prisons too crowded, but we CANT have the prisons too empty!

looks like you've already found this out DT, the date you must appear, is probably when some 'vacancies' have occurred

Down here, already well over half the prisons have been privatised by either wackenhut or that other big mob whose name escapes me just now

strangely enough, the 'private' prisons here, have a 'good' rep, compared to some of the older Govt institutions!  (go figure :o)

well, as good a rep as a prison can get ::)

Those companies profit from the low cost skilled labor of the prisoners, many defense contractors have had their circuit boards assembled in those prisons for many decades ::) It's modern day slavery that's a consequence of the War on Drugs:

Hey..I bet those buggers could make a few quid from the circuit designs for say, a predator, or reaper drone once they get out. Bound to be plenty of buyers for missile guidance systems and the like too.

Those overworked and underpaid inmates were stripped of their prison clothing, and then dressed in their work uniforms before doing any circuit board assembly  ;)  The circuit boards were split up into sections done at different locations, no one prisoner ever could possibly duplicate the entire assembly since the circuit boards were soldered together by civilian employees at another location with security clearances  :P  Obama has closed down most Unicor operations, since this company was profiting from non unionized inmate labor  ::)  The inmates were strip searched after doing their jobs as well  :-X   The authorities that conceive these travesties aren't stupid, they simply have no consciences 8)

This is terrible, but true!  Privately owned prisons have been paying of judicial system officials to keep their income intact.  Oddly enough most people in the general population roll their eyes or think you're nuts when you try to talk about it.  You'd think they'd be more concerned since their footing the bill! o.O
