post whores.....and the like!
« on: April 01, 2012, 05:08:33 PM »
.....there is nothing more annoying than having members with nothing to add to a thread but only feel the impulse to post their farsight on topics....at the hive they developed labels such as "non contribute to the post", or "irrelevant", which i thought was a good deterrent  to those that  post crap and those that feel the need to ask for mundane references and never post anything relevant....here we all contribute and not to just read ourselves on threads....so please, those of you that have marginal things to say wait till you are actually adding to a topic with your comments....java

I agree with this and is one of the reasons I added the karma system -- it is so off topic posters can be stung. :)

Yea, I like to keep threads on topic and full of valuable information.  That being said, the only reason I'm making this post is to help myself get up to the 10 posts that I was told I should make here, lol.

That is rather funny! :) Perhaps I should ask you a question so you can answer it, getting to your 10th post?

I suppose you actually bring up a good point.. at least for the first 10 posts, you have an incentive to just comment and not necessarily contribute much.. but after 10 posts there is absolutely no reason at all to want to get more and more posts.

I know personally, I was proud to have 900+ posts on Sciencemadness, and be labled as an international hazard or whatever it was...
...  and while I'd try to contribute to get a higher post count, it gave me an incentive to post -- this actually worked to the benefit of the community since if anyone ever asked a question about something I knew.. I was happy to help answer it as an excuse to post more, if it were not for that I likely still would have answered it -- but that did act as a bit (a not-so-big) bit of a driving force to post.

However... I can certainly see issues with some who might want to just post to just have more numbers by their name...

Perhaps if I made it so it was unknown how many posts everyone had -- it might make for better (or for worse... ) signal to noise ratio?

Ideally I think Post count is supposed to act somewhat as the "go" function to post, and the Karma (honey vs sting) is supposed to act as the driving/direction to the sort of posts the community wants.
I.e if someone has tons of posts, and lots of +1 they will feel belonging and post more and help more.
If someone has few posts, or even tons of posts but has many -1s and few +1 they will not feel belonging and likely either leave, not post as much, or ideally try to contribute more to get a better ratio.

I think it is good to display the number of posts next to the user names.  It should be indicative of how much that member has contributed to the forum, so you kind of know who you are talking to, in a way.  Of course, post count isn't really a measure of one's valuable contributions, but if someone is posting a lot of bullshit, then that will be evident in their posts anyway.

At the Lycaeum, I have like 3400 posts, most of which I like to think were valuable contributions.  That's over 10 years, though.  In contrast, on this night life forum I'm on, which has a lot more socializing and BSing than pointed discussion, I have 7500 posts in 5 years, and that is not even that much, relatively (the member with the most posts has 58,000, over 9 years, and one of the newer members has almost 20,000, in a little over 3 years.)

And lol, I like your ideals, but I've come to find that the internet multitudes generally don't live up to those standards, hehe.
