Unable to Upload files
« on: April 10, 2012, 07:10:38 PM »
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this and I have only one browser to try with but I am unable to upload files to the reference section.

I am using a tor-enabled firefox variant on a rarish linux distro and while I can do everything else on the site (view, respond, download etc.) I cannot get a file to upload. This is a recent issue I believe.

I get an error stating "peer reports incompatible or unsupported protocol version" "error code: ssl_error_protocol_version_alert)

Any explanation for a none too advanced computer user or suggestions as to how to rectify this?

Is this a security concern for me?

P.S on an unrelated topic when I view an old post I can view "my" IP address which I used while posting. Is there any way to purge this info?

That error message is due to a bug in the Simple Machines Forum software  8)

Several workarounds have been found  ;)  One can simply keep refreshing the web page until it works, or in some circumstances one might find that the files were uploaded and not the text so the post can be entered by reopening the reply web page or using the modify feature   :P   This error makes it take a very long time to answer a simple question generally   ::)  Thus it's always rather irritating to answer a query that could be found without posting if the member wasn't so damned lazy  :o We'll find a solution to this bug someday, but it's going to take awhile  ???  Some members act like spoiled children when they don't get an answer to their question  8)

Test test....

So it is only for you? do other members have the issue? is it from specific types of files/names of files, etc?

P.S on an unrelated topic when I view an old post I can view "my" IP address which I used while posting. Is there any way to purge this info?

Yes I will be doing it soon but I recently got super sick and hadn't been able to do so -- still to busy to mess with it now as I need to tend to other things first.

Simple workaround without deleting IP address from the database all the time is a PROXY at www.thevespiary.org =  67.20.102.209

Member <==[INTERNET]==> 67.20.102.209 proxy <==[LAN]==> 67.20.102.209 forum.

ALL members IP will show 67.20.102.209

Anonymous - HTTP Proxy server does not send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable to host, this improves privacy since your IP address cannot be logged.
High anonymity - HTTP Servers of this type don't send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR, HTTP_VIA and HTTP_PROXY_CONNECTION variables. Host doesn't even know you are using proxy server an of course it doesn't know your IP address.

Give members either...

(1) http://127.0.0.1 directly to the forum.
(2) https://proxy.thevespiary.org to HTTPS proxy first then to forum via LAN.

Interesting... will keep that in mind for future possibility.
But for now I am just going to have it delete the IP addresses every so often and replace them with bunk IP addresses.

That looks like an option. The proxy would probably still have access logs if the site is hosted on a VPS. They wouldn't directly be linked to the accounts but an attacker could potentially link original access from an IP with forum login times to identify users.

It should not be too difficult to set up a Tor hidden service on the site if it runs on a VPS. That way anyone who wants the privacy afforded by Tor can endure the slow down and other users who use a VPN etc. can access the site anonymously, directly.

The forum is hosted at www.thevespiary.org =  67.20.102.209 = 67-20-102-209.hostmonster.com A proxy can be configured to log nothing, or ONLY malicious IPs.

The host "hostmonster.com" will not allow TOR services on their servers.

Thanks All, I was deliberately trying to avoid offsite hosting as this provides IMHO clutter on the boards and is not reliable for persistent access. I have reconfigured another linux installation with the tor protocol and if my attachment to this post is successful then the issue has been resolved. For now   :-\
