The conclusion of the 2012 article that all herbal teas are potentially dangerous to human health should clarify the real agenda of these regulations
Wouldn't want you to get healthy by accident and not need all their medicines. And you wouldn't want anything with real flavor showing up in food either cause people wouldn't eat so much. Looking for them to ban whole pepper any day now.
Read an article in CE&N on some research they did on the relationship between aromatics and satiation
the article is titled "Food that Smells too Good to Eat". The scientists, in typical nerdish fashion performed experiments using human volunteers. Long story short, they found that if they gave people "retronasal puffs" of various aromatic compounds while they were eating they spontaneously ate less!! Yes!! people are satisfied quicker if food smells good!!!
To quote: "You can smell aroma in two ways.....Aroma inhaled through the nose takes the so-called orthonasal pathway. Aroma is also released from the mouth into the nasal cavity during chewing and swallowing of food and drink; this pathway is known as the retronasal route"
"Aroma compounds delivered via these two different routes stimulate different sectors of the brain. The orthonasal route activates brain regions associated with wanting and anticipating food."
That's why your stomach starts growling when you smell good food cooking.
"The retronasal route activates areas of the brain that are linked to a sense of reward, leading to sensations such as satiation."
The scientist no doubt envision hooking everyone up to Expensive Patented Machines that will give you retronasal puffs while you eat so you can lose weight. Almost as much use as taking the vitamins out of food and then putting different ones back. They also helpfully point out that a variety of aromatics worked better than just one. That's why 1/2 cup of curry does me in where 2 cups mashed potatoes doesn't satisfy.
The route that makes someone $$$ is the way scientific information will be used.
