Solvents
« on: June 09, 2012, 11:52:14 AM »
I wasn't sure where to put this so I decided "hey makin drugs uses lots of solvents" ;D

There's a good VERY early thread by shroomedalice IIRC about solvents which when I find will link to this one 8)

SOLVENTS  play such an important part in the chemists world and using them to best effect is an art in itself.

Having struggled to understand the 'hows and whys' of solvents, I thought I would share a few links to data which really helped me get my head around them.

One thing that caused much mindfuck was understanding how to decide on suitable altenative solvents.

this wiki page was very useful to fresh, it provides a concise yet complete explanation which really helped my  understanding of solvents and how to work out suitable alternatives

                                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solvent

And here's some good data on suitable drying agents for different solvents

   Solvent Drying         http://www.ochemonline.com/Solvent_drying

hope this helps somewasp :D

f1 ;)

I've really been getting into solvents recently (God, if that sentence were ever uttered in a face-to-face exchange...) and, thanks to this thread, I've decided to fully focus on getting my head around the concept.
Thanks for the kickstart, I'll be sure to return in the near future with any relevant links I might find.

Recommendations?

Thanks, although I did read your post  ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of actual literature.

well it really comes down to understanding the different properties of the solvents and how best to apply them, and so I would recommend you go looking into the things you might like to be doing in your lab, and then looking into the various possibilities "and why they are so"  ;)

imo this is probably the most interesting way...so if you're into mdxx yoou would check out the various solvents used in throughout the 'process' and take it from there :D

does that help?  :)

That's cool.

To be honest I was just eager to get a post (outside "The Den") more than anything else.
I know I shouldn't be making chit-chat here but this wasp is impatient.

Many thanks for the pointers and my apologies for shitting up your thread  ;D
