Bronze & Brass : How to Separate Cu and Sn/Zn
« on: June 12, 2012, 06:50:52 AM »
I Know
- Cu +  HCl(aq)  Doesn't react
- Sn + 2 HCl(aq) ----> SnCl2 + H2
- Zn + 2 HCl(aq) ----> ZnCl2 + H2
- Pb is often present in Bronze and maybe too in Brass inquantity like 2-5 % , And Pb + HCl ----> PbCl2+ H2 ,  But Generally, reactions of cold, dilute acids with lead are very slow

So i was thinking of

- Put my Bronze or Brass in cold dilute HCl , Waiting to dissolve entirely the tin or zinc (Outside for the H2)
- Separate Copper from Solution by filtering
- Evaporate Slowly

Is this a good method ? If you have better idea say it to me

But i have another problem , i have some block, tube ... of tin and brass and for certain piece i'm not sure if it's tin or brass
How to Know with a simple chemical reaction what is bronze and what is tin, i was thinking of adding sodium hydroxyde but the two form a white precipitate who dilute with excess NaOH

And after having my Zn and Tin chloride i wanted to form the pure metal, maybe by forming an oxyde and melting this, or electrochemistry ,  and and in a metal reduction reaction wich metal with reduce tin salt to metallic tin

if you can give me a setup for the most otc or simple reaction.

Thanks  , Bye
