The way these dudes hand out 10-30 year sentences for the dumbest shit where no one was harmed is beyond belief!
They give 20+ years to some 18yo kid for stealing a car, and in some places give a LIFE sentence to someone who commits 3!!! felonies!
I mean, Come On! FFS I've heard of dudes arrested for SHOPSTEALING some pizza was the "third strike" which landed him in prison for THE REST OF HIS LIFE!

What I can't' understand is 'why' (aside possibly, from the many "anachranistic traditions and precedents") the prosecution 'asks' for such enormous sentences and 'why' the bench gives them!
How does it possibly help or 'serve' anyone to give someone 300years or similar! even 50 for most folks means so close to the end of their 'natural lives' why even bother?

Our system down here is FAR from perfect but at least it's "reasonable" as it has this inbuilt capacity for leniency and decency, that is often seen to be applied where appropriate, by the judges of the higher courts.
Where unlike their amierikan colleagues in crime, the judges have supreme jurisdiction over their courts and have no "minimum sentences" which they MUST impose becoz the prosecutor asked for it!
For some time there has been a campaing for "truth in sentencing" where people are asking for the sentence given to to MEAN what is said e.g. when the judge says "10 years" (or whatever) 10/ten years, no more, no less would be what the prisoner served. And there's no such thing as someone getting '100 years' or somesuch idiocy!
This has pros and cons on both sides, but so far, it hasn't made sentences given for more minor offences, more severe, and possiby the opposite, as the judges realise the prisoners have no opportunity to improve their release date, as they could in the past with 'good behaviour' (many within the system think this is a 'bad thing' becoz it removes the only real incentives prisoners had to behave.) and so reduce their sentences accordingly
And someone getting more than 25 years is exceptional, there are only a few dozen in prison down here. And the sentencing is far more 'consistent' with 'precedents' and the sentences given, observed and adhered to much more closely than appears to be in the states!
Fortunately (even though 80+% is now privatised to those multinational 'security' groups like halliburton and CSL) the standards previously set in the prison system are being maintained, from what I hear.
As for the creedence given to Poo lice orificers testiclemoaning! Fuck me!
I have no doubt whatsoever the percentage of completely, and very close to innocent people are languishing in prisons around amerika IS Very High!. OR, they ARE GUILTY of primarily victimless crimes like 'drug POSESSION for personal use' and not much more.
(maybe limited distribution, but that's more a 'social service' than anything else..your friends are always grateful when given the opportuniy to access quality drugs at a fair price
