The makers of evil drugs like paroxetine (Paxil) who have already beened fined several times for misleading EVERYONE recently copped this... ;D

Quote
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is to pay $3bn (£1.9bn) in the largest healthcare fraud settlement in US history.
GSK, one of the world's largest healthcare and pharmaceuticals companies, admitted to promoting antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin for unapproved uses, including treatment of children and adolescents.
The company also conceded charges that it held back data and made unsupported safety claims over its diabetes drug Avandia.

In addition, GSK has been found guilty of paying kickbacks to doctors.

"The sales force bribed physicians to prescribe GSK products using every imaginable form of high-priced entertainment, from Hawaiian vacations [and] paying doctors millions of dollars to go on speaking tours, to tickets to Madonna concerts," said US attorney Carmin Ortiz.

AND "GSK said in a statement it would pay the fines through existing cash resources"

The profitability of this business is shown here, after all, how many companies have a  $3billion in liquid assets = a 'spare' 3,000 million dollars sitting in the bank eh?!!!

Its part of GSK business strategy, the money was pooled in advance to pay an eventual fine but the profit from the sales far out-weights the penalty. The pharma industry is not altruistic and does not care for the end-consumer, what does matter to them is the bottom line, money. Best business practices to achieve higher profit margins unfortunately do not incorporate ethical or moral obligations.

The defined boundaries of medical conditions are been increase yearly at the behest of pharma lobbyists to increase the pool of people that can be potentially diagnosed and become a consumer of their products. Pharma companies are also trying to create overlap in the medical conditions their products treat to increase sales margins and expand into new treatment markets.

These companies are not treating sickness, they are selling sickness.
