Ulipristal Acetate:a Newly Approved Agent for Emergency Contraception
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:21:59 AM »
Ulipristal Acetate (UPA) is an orally active SPRM with antagonistic and partial agonistic effects on the progesterone receptor.35 UPA, a derivative of 19-norprogesterone, exerts its effects by binding to progesterone. It also binds to glucocorticoid and androgen receptors. The binding capacity to these receptors is lower than that of its antiprogestin activity. UPA shows in vivo antiglucocorticoid and antiandrogen activity at doses 50 times higher than needed for its antiprogestin effect. The antagonistic activity of UPA is similar to mifepristone but less antiglucocorticoid activity is expressed, thus reducing the risk of glucocorticoid effects.  http://www.ebiochem.com/product/ulipristal-acetate-16041

Research from long Island university, based on clinical trials, UPA seems to be a reasonably tolerable and effective method of EC when used within 120 hours of intercourse. UPA is at least as effective as LNG when used within the first 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. However, UPA may be more effective than LNG when used between 72 to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse, extending the window of opportunity for EC. UPA may provide a new option for women who require EC up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse.

these bastards scare me with the way they introduce 'new' compounds, especially when they say stuff like

sheesh! what's "reasonable?"

It's clearly just another moneyspinner, after all, what intelligent (or even not so smart) women are going to 'wait' 3+ days to avoid pregnancy, IF that IS what they want?

I wonder which "market/demographic" they have 'targeted' with this drug?

Like Gardisil, which has had numerous 'issues' with tainted products (from infected monkey kidney cell which are used to cultivate it) and other unwanted effects, including DEATH, ...

Australia

Commencing in 2007 The Australian federal government began funding a voluntary program to make Gardasil available free of charge to women aged 12–26 for a period of two years, with an ongoing vaccination program for 12- and 13-year-olds as part of the pre-existing high school vaccination program.[77][78]

The Australian government and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) have approved the vaccine for use, and in 2007 began a nationwide vaccination program free of charge to schoolgirls in years 7 to 12. These programs are run by local councils with funding and vaccine supplies from the government. The subsidization approval process, however, appears to have been heavily influenced by politicians of all political parties, and by the Prime Minister, who publicly advised that it would be approved (before approval). In addition, women between 18 and 26 years of age at the time of the first dose may receive the vaccine for free upon request from their general practitioner. After June 2009, the program will be scaled down to 12- and 13-year-old girls only. Australia also approved Gardasil for boys 9–15 years old, but Australia is not providing government funding for vaccinating boys

YES they fuckin ARE!!!   Tis in all the 'news' reports this week!!!  ALL BOYS AND GIRLS IN OZ MUST BE 'vaccinated' with this shit...NO CHOICE!!!

What I 'read between these lines is '  "$$$$$ ka-ching ka fucking ching $$$$$!

Sure cervical cancer is the FOURTH most prevalent forms of cancer in women...but why INSIST EVERY CHILD 12-14 MUST have this?

There is NO clear data on the benefite of doing so, and wont be available for a good 15-20 YEARS!!!  IMO it's Big Brother imposing his greedy madness  >:(

And by then...it will be FAR TOO LATE to do shit!  Smells like a "Vioxx" to me, the Cox-2 inhibitors given as an anti-inflammatory, which turned out to cause MAJOR heart problems in many who took it.

It was withdrawn from the market about 6 years ago, and the lawsuits are still piling up!  :(  why am I not surprised?

Hey livy, can I ask why it is you posted this here?  It's not really in the general 'theme' of this site?

ps. Hey introduce yourself and let us know a little about you...maybe you're a hardcore industrial research chemist or  ???  Go on, dont be shy ;)
