Finding your local Chem shop
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:46:38 PM »
With a 'yellow pages' book opened up and the google maps to zoom in on the industrial part of town that doesn't even have street addresses, I found a few shops that stock various supplies. After contacting two of them, excited to get a new piece of equipment and support local business, I found that they prefer not to work with individuals - except for one shop that said the opposite which in turn had a much smaller location and surprisingly even maintained forum profiles on a certain chemistry forum.

Internet, business directories, and contacting local university ( students ) to find out who they use for their supplies.
off to bigger and better things - don't worry I will visit from time to time

well yeah they dont want to sell to privates because every supplier who does, gets visited and looked through his customer lists by the feds of course.
there are always a few, but you have to bee very very careful with them, some are porkfriendly, some are allies of us ;)

usually the shops who supply universities are of the former category when they do sell to privates. mostly they are very expensive too, because they get state-paid and dont need your few bucks anyway if they even charge you with a fair price (what dont will happen) so these guys are not of use really.

you have to contact one of those smaller companies, talk to the owner or clerk a bit, tell them how you are interested in chemistry etc, so the will see that you are known to the art.
usually the chemical suppliers who are like us, will remember then how hard it was to get ones hand on chemicals when they were not in the business and already out of college. and if you are very lucky, they will get mercy with you ;D
from then on and a few order of nonsuspicious chemicals, they will once like you if youre a nice person and stuff, talk to you about unrelated stuff etc...
remember they are humans too and mostly very likeminded people

back home, any chem shop would sell you almost anything so long as you can pay for it.

here... first place i was at i had someone point me to the right places.

then after changing cities, again... i had someone at the bar give me a certain link to a certain 'clandestine' 'social network' that he told me might be useful to me.... met a certain chemist there, who although focused on his career, was open minded enough to share with me how things work and where i can get what. he just made it clear that at this point of his life he is not to be associated with anything 'naughty'.

he pointed me to one of the few chem shops that sell to individuals, a long list of things - many of which could be considered... suspicious.

of course, by law, they are required to ask for ID and keep invoice for 5 years. so, one has to work his way around this.

but overall, most difficult part for me when i land someplace is finding what's where.

patience, networking and hanging out in the right places is what has helped me.

doesnt have to bee a clandestine network just look at the forums doing the other chemistry, the standard ones in your own country they know already, for suspicious thing you only need to look out by them.
like how the OTC products are called that contain nitroethane or those with half piperonal in it for example. i could buy anything thats not listed somewhere at normal chemistry suppliers.

btw dream0n, one of mine owns a chemistry forum too coincidentally ;D
but i dont expect its the same because some chemistry supplier are also covalent bond to chemistry for life like we ;D
just look at strike but he was stupid to run such a special chemistry forum at the same time and the stuffed bee at his bureau was also an epic fail in my opinion...

Not that kind of forum ... But I did go in the shop and have a look around, some good electrodes and lots of glass even some fancy pumps. Chemicals were ID restricted, but their policy is to just check the age not keep record unless its an unusually large amount per normal.

oh, iĀ“have meant a "normal" chemistry board too, not like the one strike made for us ;D
the same here, ID record once, to ensure you are old enough, nothing else.
doesnt matter really whos ID if you buy it online.
