Sassafras distillation trouble.
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:24:45 PM »
Hello friends,

Recently a friend of mine attempted to steam distill some sassafras rootbark he had to yield sassafras oil, only he made a mistake. The makeshift still he used to hold the rootbark, through which steam generated in the first vessel passed through, did not pass easily up the exit tube into the condenser. Upon observation, he told me he was witnessing reflux of the steam occuring, as the exit tune must have been to cold and the steam/oil dripped back into the bottom of the vessel containing the rootbark.  :-\ He cooled the vessel and collected the liquid at the bottom of the container an filtered it multiple times, but he still couldn't achieve the cleanliness that comes from steam distillation. He is sure theres oil in his mixture as well as water and very tiny debrie.

Well, my friend is not a great chemist and not a professional either but i knew for sure that diethyl ether is a great nonpolar solvent so i suggested to him to extract oil from the mixture with ether. Latest ive heard from him he had mixed the ether with the mixture in a seperatory funnel and plans to evap off the ether extracts to yield oil.

So i pose to you vesps a question of whether this is the best thing to do in this situation.

My friend would really like to recover his oil.  ::)

Thanks for any replies!

do you realize how much bark you need to distill to make it worth your next momentous task?
If you are dead set on this route, get your self a proper steam distiller, here is a place to start.

or lower end/less quantity here:

Is 3 pounds enough? ;D

But honestly i just wanted to know if the ther would work...

And really, what else would you suggest? No one wants heat.

well yeah, 3 lbs is enough to start. I sure hope you didn't pay full price cause that shit ain't cheap. PROPERLY extracted will get you a couple ounces maybe, LOL.

You need to get the steam through the root bark. The steam will carry the oil with it, condense, and separate from the eugenole (or whatever that byproduct is called). It takes a whole lot of bark to make skate on the crystal half-pipe my man. Take a look how QUANTITY get made!

 :o that thing looks sick!

Nope not full price, got a decent size harvest on a recent trip to see my budy. Not a very limited supply :D

But will ether work to seperate the oil from the water after distillation? I was planning to extract the oil from the mixture this way and evap it off...

I'm curious about this option.
Why not grind the root at much as you can and extract it with warm ethanol, or methanol or something like that, and then distill the extract with vacuum distillation?
May be I'm wrong, but sounds more easy for Home chemist than industrial steam distillation apparatus.

Yeah that would be much easier and would probably be far more fruitful on a smaller scale.

Apiole and other at roomtemperature solid propenyl/allybenzenes can bee extracted in a similiar manner even if those dont need to bee vacuum fractionated to bee relatively pure.
Obviously, those can bee recrystallized opposed to safrole under circumstances easy to achieve.

Sass oil very easy to source, why waste time gathering roots etc.  ???
