goofy site behavior
« on: December 28, 2012, 01:23:38 PM »
Recently been getting "Access Restricted" off and on from some of links lugh posts to the-collective, sometimes in the middle of searching the site.

Today, when trying to access VESP, got this:
Access denied. Your IP address [x.x.x.x] is blacklisted. If you feel this is in error please contact your hosting providers abuse department.

changing IP address in TOR was ineffective.

Strangest thing was, as soon as access open up for VESP, I immediately got the "Aceess Restricted" error on the-collective.

curious if anyone elsehas seen any goofy site behavior.

Yeah it's because someone using tor got banned or had their IP blocked but it wasn't their IP. It was the IP to a tor exit node and we share those. You logged in and used the same exit node that got blocked. It happened to me too at a few different forums. If you keep clicking "use a new identity" you'll eventually land on one that works. I've only had it happen once here but have problems at the-collective more frequently.

As was already mentioned by WizardX in:

https://the-collective.ws/forum/index.php?topic=23334.msg164549#msg164549

hackers use TOR for nefarious purposes and thus the IP addresses involved end up being blacklisted ::)  Spammers also use TOR sometimes, and since there's a limited number of exit nodes those facts have led to security software developers to block exit nodes that are used for either activity  :P  As has been said for millennia, patience is a virtue that is much rarer than it should bee 8)

Reckless has a point, though. Spammers and hackers also use proxies, but they may use Tor a bit more since it's more secure. Besides that, Cloudflare doesn't exactly have a spotless reputation. It's run by people known for their work on deep packet inspection who have worked closely with LE in the past. They have been involved in setting up internet honeypots and also in fighting spam. They claim the service speeds traffic but that's been disputed, and to the best of my knowledge it's completely unproven.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but if you get one of their captcha screens in the middle of writing a post you can kiss your post goodbye. It's smart to use an offline work processor to write posts anyway, but I don't always take my own advice. Lately Cloudflare has burned me repeatedly.

Cheers,
PP

very concerning indeed.
In another thread, Vesp said he didn't do anything to fix it.
