IRC chat
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:23:05 PM »
Would be useful to chat in real time. Im sure theres a way to secure it so anyone who connects doesnt have everyones ip. Maybe make the whois command for admins only? Dmt-nexus has this. Any input is welcome

I would really like an IRC channel for bees.  I am even down to put up some money if there is some way it could be done safely.

This has been proposed before. The issues I see, would be: (1) LE here, posing as members, luring you into a 1 on 1 chat to gather intel. (2) without moderators input.

"Don't talk to strangers" is always a good advice.

IRC could have registered nicknames (in allingment with those on the forum).

Using a cloak helps with /whois.

It's possible to have anonymous IM communications. For 1-1 you can use something like Jabber and OTR while connecting to your jabber server over Tor. It is also possible to have standalone IM communications over Tor using Torchat which works with each user having their Hidden Service. In my opinion the best option for group chats would be to have a private SILC server (http://silcnet.org) on a Tor hidden service. It allows users to authenticate with their own private key pair and you have the transport security of the Tor network. I'd be happy to set up a trial server if people are interested?

I'd be interested if it's hosted on a SILC server, although there might not be a large enough userbase here to make it worth your time.

What would be the benefits of communication via IRC vs. the current forum setup?
