sniffing out bullshit
« on: March 13, 2013, 05:27:00 AM »
how many folks go back through some of these heavy poster's stuff? Or the flavors of the month(s)...Curious how others go about sniffing out the bullshit

we got people posting advice on topics they couldn't find less than 2 months ago, and other people sounding eerily like our lost wild well informed friend...

what exactly does lurk in the shadows?
roll some bones and catch a fire

That is the challenge in using a site like this. The longer you are in the game the easier it gets to spot the nonsense. You really just need to look at the previous posts to get a sense of whether the person posting is a wasp or a wank, in most cases. It also very apparent reading through previous posts which wasp really have their act together. Listen to those wasps. But you don't see those wasps just giving procedures away, they may offer advice, but they also expect others to do some leg work (research, experiments etc) first.

The other safeguard everyone should be using is referring to the references that a procedure is based upon, not just on a procedure that was posted anonymously. Make an effort to understand what it is you are trying to do, and why it works, instead of blindly following a "recipe". This way you don't need to rely on questionable advice.

No offense meant to the OP, but who gives a shit?  sure, some find these boards and tell stories, but others are really doing the deal.  I personally have NO formal chemistry training, so i hypothetically depend on y'all to tell me why my hypothetical rxn (that i got from a hypothetical  patent) isn't working the way it says.  Then someone would explain the mechanics of the rxn, and I would understand then.  Hypothetically, I would have learned chemistry through failure, but it really would have been my own hypothetical trial and your explaination of my error.  Then it would become clear.

I usually first check if something about it is on SCM. In most cases this solves it.

But there is now a density of misinformation on ertain topics whic makes it difficult to go up against it. Mostly when this misinformation can be found on the Rhodium mirrors and is reseeded from there again and again people believing that whats written there is gospel.
Actually with only Eleusis musings they might be better off.
