benzo bee inquiry
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:51:24 AM »
the ol lady has been working out p-benzo via hydroquinone/H2O2 method:

www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/benzoquinone.html

never had much luck "following" this route. Have been able to get 70-90% yields dumping everything in a flask, bring to a boil and letting cool. Canary yellow, eye stinging beauty. Dumb luck suppose.

Recently came across old hive posting titled "break through for benzo bees" (h**p://about.mdma.ch/000473279.html) or something of the sort.
It seemed similar to the method she had happened across. Recently read a thread at SM claiming similar methods. So she gave benzo bee a shot.

After 2 tries, both ending in black useless gook, she is pondering WTF...

there are 3 (maybe 4) main variables b/w usual success and this black BS:

1) using new bottle of higher percentage H2O2. Used 30% in past, this 35%. Took into account in her rudimentary stoichiometry.
2)no stir bar, but manually swirled plenty
3)overall stoichiometry was off. She followed the benzo bee quantities (365 gm IPA, 165 gm hydroquinone, 1 gm I2, 185 (30%) H2O2) without checking the stoichiometry
4) the I2 was still wet with a little DH2O

Just curious what other EXPERIENCED bees know...I am leaning towards 3, but the new H2O2 could be bad. Going to go through the math and run and synth with old quantities to see WTF....

It may just be that your Peroxide is bad. it does look like you used less catalyst (.5g) more ipa (even if yours was 91%).
In bond's thread it looked like both homeslice, and Mercury had success with his method. Rhodium's first method A (at the very bottom of the thread) looks quite good
Quote
(A) H2O2 (60%) (10.0 mL, 0.22 mol) was added dropwise with stirring to a solution of Hydroquinone (0.20 mol), I2 (0.01 mol), and concentrated H2SO4 (10 mL) in methanol (600 mL) at room temperature. After 4 h part of the formed quinone crystallized and was collected by filtration. The methanolic solution was poured in 100 mL of water and extracted with ether, and the solvent evaporated to give crude benzoquinone. Yield 97%.
