Hello All, I am becoming very discouraged
« on: March 28, 2013, 11:38:36 PM »
I just wanted to check in and say hello.  I've been reading on this forum for about a year and figured it was time to say hi.  Anyway, after several attempts at purchasing high quality oil I'm becoming extremely discouraged.  Sometimes it was my fault and other times product shows up, but has no goodies.  My most recent acquisition was supposed to be 85-88%, when it arrived I ran some simple tests.  It smelled wonderful, and exactly like the roots I've pulled up from sass trees, but It floats on water and seems to boil around 212-220C.  It is really depressing and sometimes I just want to give up.  Can someone please tell me if I am wasting my time looking to purchase?  Is my only hope steam distilling myself?, which seems like a monumental task even for 1 liter of quality oil.  I'm not looking to be spoon fed, but can someone point me in the right direction.  I'm tired of throwing my hands in the air.  If I could get some responses or someone could msg me with some advice, I would be grateful.

Sorry for venting and I hope I posted in the right section.

I can say this.

You are a lucky fucker to even have the option of digging roots and steam distilling them for some product. I wouldn't care if it took a month to extract a reasonable amount due to the sheer bliss of the end product. Plus a litres worth reacted well will yield a nice mountain of product to last one a while :)

Keep going. Can't offer any help with acquisition. I doubt many others are going to either. That's jus down to you.

Make some friends and show your knowledge. Bees might help. Who knows...

Good luck and welcome.

Oil that has any percentage of safrole would sink in water correct?  When washing with 25% GAA it seemed everything stayed on top.  This is clear sign of no goodies right?

Sneak, I know that I'm lucky to have the option of steam distilling from the source.  It seems like from what I've read, a ton of root bark must be collected to make even a liter with goodies.  It sounds like you're telling me this is the way to go.

Thanks,

I have no experience of the stuff.

Why don't you try reading this if you've not already.

Give us some results.

http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/safrole.congealing.html

Why don't you steam distill a small amount to begin with over time. Succeed, bee happy with a stash of product and proceed to spend the next six month vigorously steaming a large amount of root :)

Seems the most viable to me for someone in your situation. Introducing yourself a year ago and laying down some posts may have helped. But no point dwelling about the past..

Why don't you give a formal introduction an let us know a little about you.. And what your goals are.

There are heaps of information on purification of safrole before use.
The preferred way would be to distill it under vacuum with a short column for separation.
If you dont have the gear to do this then you may have a look into freezing it out, the informtion you need is at Rhodiums/Erowid, or here or at the-collective.ws or at thousand other places.
Of course without the equipment for such an distillation you will have problems in the further processing of the safrole where vacuum distillation is more or less mandatory.
Ok you can do without but its not good and problems may arise a-plenty.

There is tons of information and it has all been read over and over.  Using simple distillation of about 50ml, at about 220 C stuff came over, about 15ml or so remained.  The remainder floated on top of water.  After reading other posts it seemed not using vacuum was a good start in checking constituents and BP's.  No vigreux column was used.

Attempting a congealing test is a good idea. That will be done next.  Also, using vacuum and a vigreux column will be used to distill the remainder of the oil.

It was diluted with ethanol and tested with concentrated H2SO4, the first result was a purple color, but second test resulted in an orange color.

Going to get a pressure cooker and do some steam distillation so testing can be done on a definite safrole containing oil.

I have a source for some oil. Was I pay 400 a liter but you get a price break with larger quantities. Am I allowed to say the source?
