When plugging a vigreux column, will copper wool or wire mesh react with HCL gas?  Is one better then another.  I have glass insulating wool, but it seems too thick.  I've done the research, but get conflicting information.

As always any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Flight

It looks like copper wool may do the trick.

This is how your reaction will look like when using copper on HCl
Only special alloys really resist strong acids, Inconel, Hastalloy I think, most pretty expensive hard to work on stuff. Tantalum of course  ;). But why do you want to plug your Vigreux? Whats the purpose?

The reason to plug the vigreux is so that it can be filled with CaCl2.

A continuous filament spun glass cut from a furnace heater will be used to plug the end of the vigreux.  This seems like the best option.

An desire for fiery destruction seems to be what's in store for the original poster   :o  The most probable result of heating a glass vessel that's closed by plugging the column is ejection and then a fire  :(  A thread has been posted at the Collective:

https://the-collective.ws/forum/index.php?topic=23506.0

since the file in the thread here is ignored far too often:

The file is attached here as well  ::) The end really does result from the effort applied  8)
