Glyoxylic acid
« on: August 25, 2009, 05:09:19 AM »
Looking for a good OTC synthesis for glyoxylic acid. Wikipedia says "The compound is formed by organic oxidation of glycolic acid or ozonolysis of maleic acid." Ozonolysis seems like a lot of trouble according to wikipedia. If it is actually super easy any reading suggestions? The organic oxidation makes a lot more sense to me. Glycolic acid is OTC so that's good and the first thing that popped into my mind was reacting it with hydrogen peroxide. Then I started trying other things. Sorry, no electron write up, don't remember how to do that. Please check chemistry.
C2H4O3(aq)+H2O2->C2H2O3(l)+2H2O(l)
C2H4O3(aq)+NaOCl(aq)->C2H2O3(l)+H2O(l)+NaCl(aq)
C2H4O3(aq)+KNO3(aq)->C2H2O3(l)+H2O(l)+KNO3(aq)

I wouldn't recommend the last two, KNO3 especially.  You might have some luck with NaOCl but it's most likely limited.  Your best bet would be oxidation with a chromate, or H2O2.  I've always had problems with H2O2 oxidations for a couple reasons: 1) They don't always work when you want them to, usually needing a catalyst of some sort. 2) far too many variables, especially for an experimental trial.  A lot of times, if your H2O2 is below a certain concentration, it wont do what you want.  I've got a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, not more than 4 or 5 months old and it all of the sudden refuses to oxidize stuff.  I bought a fresh bottle, and it works flawlessly.  It was stored in the fridge with it's cap tightly on too, imagine that.

very easy by electroreduction of oxalic acid

see United States Patent 5395488
It is perhaps the narcotic. Hyoscine affects certain people very oddly. One cannot be sure. Sometimes, these cases take strange forms. The victim becomes in a sense, 'mediumistic', a vehicle for all the intangible forces in operation around her.
