encrypted email
« on: October 26, 2009, 02:47:29 AM »
for all those who would like a secure 1028bit encrypted email acc for FREE go to "hushmail.com"  8)  ( this post is NOT an advertisment for them-- :-X)

i just find it reassuringly handy considering how many home chemists are(often sadly) considered "outlaws"--IMHO it pays to make it as hard as possible for LE to fuck with you--small minds etc >:(

--the only drawback is with the free acc you can only have 8 recipients.. ::)

Also if you read there documentation you signed before recieving your account you will see that they state to turn over your account to the proper authorities on request. I got one but better judgment told me to stay away from it as something seemed funny about a place that claimed security from prying eyes then told me they would turn me over first chance they got. ???

What a better ruse then to setup a mail site for people that could be doing illegle activity just to use any mail received against them in court  :-X

thanx guys  :o this is exactly the type of information i appreciate--s'ok any alternatives?

also considering i am in the southern hemisphere,,and i guess their server/site is somewhere 'else'--how much trouble would it be for LE to access? wouldn't they have to have some form of

"agreement"with the relevant 'authorities' in the country of the site/&-or servers?  cyberspace has got me fucked at times :P

Steganography would be neat to use I think, though I don't have a use for it... have em be normal emails about pictures or have them be forwards...

The bottom line when it comes to encrypted email is that if you want to be safe then you have to have control over your private key. If you let a web based email provider control your private key then your encryption because useless as protection against LEO. Also make sure the people you communicate with do the same.

Ding ding ding. And we have a winner! With Tor too..... I've been meaning to do a writeup for this setup for everyone but haven't got around to it. Bottom line is any system where you don't create the key and are the only single one keeping the key is not a trusted system. You must create the encryption key and be the only one with it (obviously the private part of the key, not talking about the public key). I'll do a writeup for Enigmail/Gmail/Pgp/Tor soon for everyone.

I think gmail is a poor choice for a free pop3 email address. Gmail now requires that you enter a mobile phone number and they send you a text message with a sign up code. Then you have to waste money on another prepaid phone to receive the text (I'm assuming no one is dumb enough to use their own cell phone). Hxxp://www.lavabit.com has free pop3 email address and do not require a mobile number or any real info to sign up.

Wizard, the link to the Linux version of Crypto Anywhere is broken. Do you have a copy, by any chance?

I use GnuPG with a smart card. You can use a Thunderbird plug-in called Enigmail.

Also if you set your GPG up correctly you can store the secret key on the smart card itself, not on the computer.
This way if your pc is seized it makes it harder to decrypt any encrypted mail.

I use the Open GPG smart card from Kernel Solutions, if your pin is entered incorrectly 3 times the card locks permanently.
Thus preventing a brute force attack on your key.

I use the enigmail plug-in for thunderbird. Besides having to enter an extra password you just do everything as you usually would. It automatically encypts mail you're sending and decrypts the mail you receive after you enter the password. Make sure you generate the largest key possible. That's it, really easy to use. Make sure you enable SSL for connecting to the server.

instructions are on the site.

I would also recommend getting a POP3 email account with lavabit.com best place around by far.
