The azeotrope consists of of 92/8 methanol/nitromethane so you shouldn't expect a whole lot.... anyway, water is miscible with methanol while nitromethane is but soluble..

Thats what I always did. Funny you mention the density issue because I never really gave it much thought...

The density of saturated NaCl soln is 1.2 g/mL and the density of nitromethane is 1.14 g/mL. but it is strange that his organic phase was on top.

Hmmm, anyone think straight hobby fuel would be a piss poor idea for the reductive amination?  The stronger stuff usually contains less oil; the stuff I have is 30% nitro and 9% oils, the balance being methanol.  I think it would work if the aluminum is perhaps balanced out to the castor oils (hydrogenated oil... shit, the MDMA would have trans-fats!!! oh noes)
