New mobile encrypted system for evil.

The new ubuntu lts is out in just a little bit. Is anyone interested in instructions to getting a full encrypted partition install(not live) on a usb?

What I am planning is bootloader/mbr and encrypted partition on a big usb with a full system, so anywhere that has a computer that can boot from a usb, can be your own system. It should be do-able with even new-ish computers(boot from USB) and should rock. The only bit at this stage is wear leveling with a swap file or just don't run a swap.

What do people think?

Using a system such as this would only leave traces in ram that would pretty much be lunched the next time the computer was started. A strong passphrase on the luks would leave "them" out of luck.

If it is possible to get it all on the mbr of the usb and working, I will be back to share.

Yeah Wiz, most run knoppix like ubuntu, from a "live" compressed image. Some use "persistent" file(s) to keeps their settings. I actually want to go all the way to a full install on the usb, which is explained on a few different websites. What isn't explained, and I need to mess with it to see if it is even possible is to have a MBR and one encrypted partition on a USB, and have the bits work. LUKS and dm-crypt work no problem from real HDs but USBs can be different.

So even more then just hauling around info on an encrypted disk, you would be hauling around an encrypted system, set up how you like it with your book marks, programs, files... you get the picture. Not nearly the most secure encryption, but still no joke. Check out what the nerds have written about it.

Now a real weakness would be carrying around your private key, but that is a risk anyway and it might as well ne lightly encrypted

A 16GB usb drive would actually be way more then enough, depending on your documents size. My lin/win laptop has a ~10GB debian partition. The debian install is hardly denting the 10GB. I am actually planning on doing the testing on a 8GB usb.

I think ubuntu is the best choice for the most people and most machines to just run without a bunch of dicking around so that's why not one of the other distros.

because it's not located in the US and thus has versions that couldn't be made available if they were   ::)  This Live CD is probably best suited for the purposes of interest here:

OpenBSD is the most secure OS that I know of -- perhaps it has some use here as well?

If you think you can make an openBSD system hop from computer to computer like an ubuntu distro, you are higher than me. More power to you, just I am not helping.

As for the mobile system of evil, I am sort of flip floping on using a full install to usb or run live off the usb. As far as security is concerned, these are mobile, do their work and then are off line with little chance for attack. What little chance there is sort of leans towards the live image option, because it is mostly fresh and new every boot. WHat you gain in clean, you lose in not being updated. Then there is the software.

Like everything I start, this has expanded in every direction at once. I have found the key to dark matter ;)

All traces should leave the RAM in less than 5 minutes regardless of whether or not the computer is restarted. The only exception would be if the RAM is super cooled.
