Passion Flower harvest
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:18:02 PM »
I've been on the lookout for these ever since I heard they grow wild here.  Why pay if you can get them for free?

I don't know if there are any fun stuff in the plant other than it's good for making you sleepy.  I think I saw one or two varieties that have DMT in the leaves, will research it later.  I dug up a couple of small ones to see if i can grow them on the fence, ought to go well with the morning glories and my tie dye t-shirt.

Based on the flower color I think this is Passiflora Incarnata  - listed in wiki as having harman in the fruit - too early for the fruit although you can see a few small ones on it.

I washed them and they are drying that is the third pic.

I am not an expert in passion flower, but are you sure the leaves contain any actives? I was thinking it was only the flowers and the fruits, as well as perhaps the seeds?

Either way, good luck growing them! Let us know how it turns out.

I am rarely sure of anything.  I read so much stuff and only parts of it get retained so I always have to go double check things - I write with a lot of I'm not sure unless I am.  I believe I have it correctly identified as to the species - there's a couple that have glucocyanates (sp?) in them. I have bought it from botanicals to use for sleeping medicines.  Right now the stems and flowers are drying together in one tray and the leaves in another.  The guide to survival in organic chemistry lab emphasizes a lot never to throw away anything until you are SURE you have your product.

I can check for harmine/harman etc using black light and I'm patiently waiting for the ingredients to arrive to prepare Dragendorff's Reagents.  (Bet it takes me a lot longer than I'm thinking- nothing is ever simple!)

Mainly posted the pics in case anyone else wanted to know what it looks like in the wild - one forum had some guy going absolutely nuts trying to find the seeds for morning glories (or else he was pulling someone's leg)

There's alkaloids in the leaves, I've used them in a tea before. It was mild, but nice. Never tried the flowers. I think I read somewhere that the fruits contain no actives. Not sure about the seeds though.
The caerulea strain has highest levels of glucocyanates I recall.
