Swim made some MeNH3.HCl via Hex and methanol. After removing excess NH4Cl, volume was reduced with vacuum in a water bath untill very very thick. If Swim uses Butanol to extract, some water will come over as well. So what will this water more likely bring with it, methylamine or NH4CL?

Kind regards,
FC

is there a stociometric amount of HCl to MeNH2, if so both the MeNH2.HCl and NH4Cl will prefer the water, if you based it im sure the MeNH2 would have a slighly higher BuOH:H20 partition coeffecient, but probobly not eneough higher to be a good speration technique. the partition coeffecient for octanol to water for MeNH2 is 0.25, which means the concentration of MeNH2 iin octanol is only about one quarter of water given a 2 layer system. i can't find it for ammonia but that basically means methylamine doesn't have a high affinity for NP's.

the boiling point of MeNH2 is alot higher then NH3's though, -7C,-33C respectivly
