Where can I find or who can send me some plain english trustworthy stuff on a home lab and synthesis / chem equivalents etc in Lamen's terms??

I don't mean to sound daft but I've been reading through these pages and I'm just not that advanced!!

I don't trust fk all i've read so far in various cookbooks or whatever its just too fkkkin dangerous - one typo and it all goes tits up you get me? - At the same time though you guys are just blowing my head off with science! - I'm not gonna freestyle it just yet !! - just wanna understand the science behind it !

I know a science teacher who can explain it 2 me but she wants the info as well!

Help us out dudes! Smile

there is no such thing as a laymans guide to making controlled substances except maybe the few books by loompanics. anyways, you will surely NOT get around acquiring the proper knowledge, or you will go tits up for sure. do as i did: get the basic knowledge, read, read, read. THEN go ahead and ask about how it's done, because you can't buy a car, sit behind the steering wheel and then ask somebody how to drive. you get the picture.
if you haven't yet watched the movie "SPUN", do it. and get some chemistry books!

i too can vouch for the need to get schooled in all the relevant chemistry info before getting started. getting the crucial equipment is essential too - separatory funnel, vacuum filtration setup, pH measuring and a variety of flasks and beakers and miscellaneous bits and pieces (graduated cylinder, test tubes etc).

like joe says, you can't just jump in at the deep end, before you can get started you gotta know all the basics, otherwise expect a string of failures before you finally get the picture and learn the essentials. to use the same metaphor about driving, first thing you gotta know to drive is the road rules, then you need practical experience derived from experienced drivers guidance and supervised (or at least sandboxed, ie small scale) practice, and then, and only then, can you expect to get anything other than a lot of hard lessons followed by realising these essentials cannot be substituted.

most how-to guides assume this basic knowledge. there's tons of good chemistry texts available online now... the lab survival guide is a definite must read, it gives you all the info you need to know for performing all the basic operations. vogel's is good for learning about the basics of reactions and theoretical chemistry.

If the info on this site and rhodium is too advanced for you... you shouldnt be doing it... learn a bit first or no matter how simple the instruction it will all still go "tits up".

I agree with the above and one tip: try to post in the right forum next time. I think General Chemistry would have been a better place....

Greetings SHADYJAY

I can identify with your want to learn chemistry, but as the other bees stated, it is impossible to transform something as complex as organic chemistry into simple "laymans" terminology. After all, you can only simplify something to a certain extent.

That being said, you WILL have to do a little (read: a lot) of reading.

The following is what is what helped me greatly:

1. Download "Kings Chemistry Survival Guide" (which can be found in the massive "E-Books" thread, compiled by Java, et al.). Read up to where the preparations section begins. This will give you insight into chemical bonding/oxidation states, and will help you decipher the shorthand notation used by other, college educated bees.

2. Download "Vogels Practical Organic Chemistry 5th edition." I think it's in the e-books thread, but if not, it should be found on any good Peer-2-Peer application (Kazaa, E-Donkey) My copy is 14.3 MB, uncompressed PDF. This book is a veritable treasure chest of information.

3. Download "John McMurray - Organic Chemistry 5th Edition" from a Peer-2-Peer app. This is a college textbook, but don't let that intimidate you. Read and re-read one chapter at a time until you understand it, and if you become frustrated, take a break and let the info marinate for a while. Don't force it. My copy is 80.6 MB uncompressed PDF.

4. Download "The Organic Chemistry Survival Manual" (found in the "E-Books" thread). This book is the shit. It explains proper laboratory practice and techniques in plain, understandable, "layman's" english. Read it from cover to cover. Memorize it. Have sex with it. No joke.

When you think you are ready for your first synthesis, make absolutely certain you understand what the hell is going on during the reaction. This will greatly increase your chances of success, and proportionatly decrease your chances of killing yourself or even worse, other people.

I know it seems like a lot of reading, but it's worth it. How far do you want to go? I don't know about you, but when I read experience reports on Erowid about 2C-B, I think to myself, "I must try this compound!" And if you are comitted, you will.

Heed the above bees' advice/warnings. They know what they are talking about.

Good luck,
nooneinparticular
