file names abridged on copy

| When copying the hives old picproxie_doc file i find that longer names are being abridged. E.g. 123456789.gif becomes 1234~1.gif. When copying and pasting single files it seems to keep the origonal name, but when i copy the entier directory, 3500 files, it cuts the names down. I want to maintain the origonal names, how can i fix this? |

| Are you copying through DOS? Windows should be able to handle this no problem. |

| Hmm... Try copying the contents of the directory, instead of the directory itself. If that doesn't work, I'd bet money that it's set that way in your settings somewhere. |

I'm assuming that you are copying files using Windows Explorer in Windows XP. If you can copy single files with no problem, there should be no problem copying several files simultaneously.
Did you try this?: Open the folder that contains the files to be copied. Press (Ctl+A) to "Select All". Then, press (Ctl+C) to copy all of the files or (Ctl+X) to cut. Next, open (or create & open) the destination folder. Finally, press (Ctl+V) to paste the files. The full file-name should be preserved.
If you prefer point-and-click over the keyboard commands, the "Edit" menu at the top of the screen contains the "Select All", "Copy", "Cut", and "Paste" commands.
Copying files this way is no different than doing one file. Windows should just copy the files induvisually, without you having to drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste each one. I know this doesn't solve the problem, but it is a quick fix.
EDIT: Oops... looks like primathon said the same thing in simpler terms. |

I hear exactly what you are saying however this thing is very, very anomalous. Ill try to describe the situation as best i can. The base directory has the following characteristics a la right-click, properties... and by the way, its in a FAT32 file system (on my external HD)...
size: 445MB (467,131,215 bytes)
size on disk 480MB (504,070,144 bytes)
contains 3495 files, 0 folders
Upon creating a test folder on the same drive and leval as the directory in question, there is no action when I select all the files within the folder and try to copy and past into the new test folder. However I am able to place a copy of the diretory as a whole into the test folder however a currious thing happens, the resulting copied directory (within the test folder) has the following properties:
size; 452MB (474 729 917 bytes)
size on disk: 488MB (511,852544 bytes)
contains: 5320 files, 0 folders
And the abridging process occurs. for example, and i had to order the files by size to pick out a few examples: "000524736-eBook_-_chemistry_Chemie_Monson_Richard_S_-_Advanced_Organic_Synthesis.pdf" becomes "000524~4.PDF" And "000510951-Chem_Ber_108_Michael_addition_of_lithium_organics_to_nitroolefins.pdf" becomes "000510~1.PDF"
This is very bad because this is the externaly linked-to documents folder that would accompany a compleate offline archive of the hive. So these files names must be preserved for obvious reasons or much effort would be requiered to fix this. I have no freakin clue why its doing this. Im not a windows pro but iv poked around everywhere looking for a setting that would affect the maximum file name length and i cant find one. But it so vaguely seems like something i remember seeing somewhere - perhaps on windows and disk initial install? i dont know.
I attempted a work-around by trying to create a zip file of the directory and my zipping program encounters an error part way through the process; "
compressed folders error: file not found or no read permission." So it stops but i does create a zip folder containing the files up to the file before it errored...
When looking in the directory in question, the last file that is not containted in the zipped folder cannot be opened and when right clicked only a partail function window pops up, instead of properties and cut and paste functions, it only has open print and send to. I ran scan disk on the HD and it didnt find any errors. suggestions?
btw, the file that caused the error is "000217986-Direct_mono-N-alkylation_of_amines_in_ionic_liquids_-_chemoselectivity_and_reactivity.pdf" anyone else having the hives picproxie_docs file please check the integrity of this file and see if you have a large number of abridged files as well.
