purification of NMP

Howdy,
I'm planning to distill some NMP to get it dry (the sure-seal is starting to concern me...).
I'm thinking a stragiht-forward vacuum distillation from calcium hydride and collection onto molecular sieves will do the trick.
Anyone have any experience of drying NMP - any good methods?
Cheers |

you would sure want to have a look at the e-books section first, where it says "purification of...". thank you |

well thanks for your reply which I'm assuming you intended to be patronising. If so, well done. You're obviously very clever.
Anyway, in a further request to those of you who aren't muppets, anyone have experience with drying NMP? Or see any reason why distilling from calcium hydride should not work?
Maybe I should have pointed out that the route described in the purification of lab chems involved azeotroping with benzene followed by fractional distillation on a 1 metre column. For a number of reasons, this does not appeal to me... |

well, no patronising intention, maybe you should have included the note that you have previously looked up the method in the relevant ebook.
you sure do understand that it is utterly annoying, having to deal with posts that say "how do i do this or that" which could have been answered by the authors themselves by reading chemistry books.
i even wonder how people come to ask "whats the molar mass for mda freebase" AFTER they have made it! how can anyone be so dumb and not know the very basics of chemistry and attempt a synthesis? it's not a surprise to me anymore that many clandestine labs go boom in the middle of a synth... |

Fair enough, maybe i should have included the fact that I have looked for this information already - I suppose I just take it as read that when someone asks a question they've thought about it and done the obvious things first.
Probably a stupid assumption...
anyway, nothing clandestine about me, just looking for a little experienced advice. |

well, if anyone was interested - i did find a reference (forget it now) where they distilled their NMP from CaH2 onto activated 4A seives, so this is what I have done, and it seems to have worked... |
