i would like to add that phosphorus triiodide is a chemical of interest here, red phosphorus and iodine react first to form PI3, and then when you put PI3 with water it hydrolyses to HI, H3PO3 (phosphorous acid) and small amounts of phosphine and if you are heating it too much, diphosphine (enough of this forms and one gets a flask fire)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphorus_triiodide

fucks me how it has come to bee that the bees didn't know that was what happens but anyway, this shall now be set right. it is my opinion that rP/I2 should be used for iodination only and the reaction should be anhydrous (the iodination reaction is very fast and is over in about 20-30 minutes i believe), and then follow this with a reduction using potassium phosphite (i have started developing a method to do this, check out my phosphorus triiodide thread)
