hopefully i'm not just wasteing bandwidth, and this is actually as useful as i think it could be....

but does anyone else think:
2KI + O3 + H2O --> 2KOH + O2 + I2

could this be a quick and painless way to I2 if one acquires an ozone generator and bubbles the O3 through the KI solution?

and can't you get ozone generators and KI solutions both at marine type pet store?

yea......i don't blame anyone for not answering this ques...
whilst looking through Vogel's practical organic chem(3rd ed.) i found my answer......

i wonder what this dream ozone generator would do:
aquarium pump in the recirculation container
going to vessel 1
which is attached to vessel 2
and the exhaust tube going into
the recirculation container

design of vessel 1:
- airtight, but i don't think it'll need to hold much(depending on how much the worklight will heat up the air and your dia. of tubeing)
- heat resistent enough to withstand a lit up halogen light(quartz glass worklight)
- air inlet tube (that won't melt) running all the way to the bottem of vessel
- air exit tube secured in the top/lid

design of vessel 2:
- your OTC iodine/iodide solution
- air tight but doesn't have to hold pressure or be heat resistent at all
- inlet tube running to the bottem
- air exit tube coming out the top

O3 recirculation contianer:
- ice cream bucket with the lid on, and the power cord of the pump going out through a hole that's been silicone sealed
- a large(r then vessel2's air exit tube) diameter tube coming out of the bottem and connecting to the intake tube of vessel 1
- vessel2's air exit tube coming in the vessel through a small hole in the side of the vessel and running a couple inches inside the hose going to V1's air intake.

my theory:
the UV light from the halogen work light converts O2 to O3 with is then bubbled through the iodine+iodide solution doing the reaction stated in my first post.
there's an extreamly good chance not all the O2 reacted to form O3 in the first pass, and an equally possible chance that all the O3 that did form, failed to react with the iodine+iodide mix.
hence the reason for the recirc thingy.

any comments,
either about my missing something slightly, or being right out to lunch is extreamly appreciated.

peroxide works great. i dunno why one would bother with anything else. i tried using bleach once and it overoxidised and i used bugger all bleach. 3% peroxide is easy to get right and easy to get.
