after the CTH according to Barium, swija is left with an upper, red layer (where does that come from, ketone?) which the Pd/C clings to and a lower (probably aqueous) almost clear layer. in the upper layer, tiny needle-like crystals have formed (whats this?) after standing for a few hours and the rxn. mixture smells quite strange. the smell was the same after another approach, is it maybe isopropylformate? never smelt it before.

edit: fucking shit...somehow the rxn didn't yield anything. a lot of starting material was recovered. one thing i took note of when the reagents were mixed in the beginning that the mixture turned baby blue.

is it homemade Pd/C? cause that tends to yield no yield or low yield, according to how the bees humm....

no, it's degussa Pd/C 10%. thats what bugs swija about the method. last time swija did get something out of it but in the end she fucked up in the workup so no yield could be determined. this time, nothing happened at all. swija don't even know if there was hydrogen or CO2 evolution...the solvent (IPA) was bubbling nicely while refluxing...
