Las Vegan faces 20 years to life in prison

BATON ROUGE, La. -- A Las Vegas man faces 20 years to life in prison after admitting to selling designer drugs that a quadriplegic used in a fatal overdose.

Michael James Burton, 25, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to the most severe charge of a four-count indictment alleging drug possession and distribution that resulted in a death.

Defense attorney Frank Holthaus said Burton dropped plans to challenge the constitutionality of the laws prohibiting the chemicals that Burton sold because of the severity of the possible sentences.

"The only way to preserve such a challenge is to go to trial and risk a life sentence just to get an issue before the Supreme Court," Holthaus said. "It's just not worth the risk."

Burton, who is jailed without bond, will be sentenced later by U.S. District Judge Frank Polozola.

Burton's arrest resulted from a nationwide Drug Enforcement Agency investigation targeting Internet dealers of designer drugs marketed as "research chemicals." In July 2004, 10 people were arrested in Georgia, California, Arizona and Nevada. Others wee arrested in Great Britain.

The government accused Burton of operating an Internet site called American Chemical Supply to sell chemicals that were obtained in the United States, China and Germany. The substances sold have similar effects as Ecstasy or LSD, but a slightly altered chemical makeup, federal authorities said.

James Downs, 22, of St. Francisville, bought two vials of a chemical powder for $265 in early 2004, the government said. After taking some of the powder on March 9, 2004, he went into a coma and died four days later at a hospital, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Burton earned about $300,000 over three months last year and is still owed at least $123,000 from credit card companies. He agreed to forfeit all his profits.

Does anyone know what chemical cuased the fatal overdoese? Damn 20 to life?? I thought only one person in history was brought down on the anolog act, and it failed because the legal guidelines were to vague. What chem companies were churning out multi-kilo batches of research chems in the first place. Alotta the chems offered where pretty hard to synth and gave really low yeilds. I mean I doubt that the owner of the company was the one synthing all those chems so.... Never realaize why anyone would operate on a leval that could bring them life. Smart to always stay under the max, so if one day you are busted you can minamize the damage.

I think the thing is that america is pretty crazy.
The only way Burton would be found guilty during trial was if they proved he willingly sold these chemicals as drugs, advertissed them as drugs, and answered questions like dosage, effects, etc...
defiently, he did not synthesize all chemicals himself, i remember even seeing an article about the case and there it was specified that chems were purchased from germany, switzerland, and china.
as I see it, he probably did all the stuff mentioned, and this made him think they got a solid case bout him.
and the chemical that caused the death, if memory serves right, was of the 2ct family.
bottom line kids, if u want to open an RC business, do it away from the U.S., and make damn sure u dont sell only RC's, and make even more sure, that u dont sell to kids, dont treat the chems as drugs, and most defiently dont sell to ppl with emails like "trippy@gg.com", "ravergirl@hh.com" etc.....

Rumor has it that the chemical in question was 5meoamt.

I recieved a phone call about this before webtryp happened, and my source told me that it was in regards to 5meoamt and a rave on a navel base.

There was also a death involving 2ct21, which has receieved much public report.

While I have little facts regarding it, I strongly believe that 2ct21 antagonizes lsd . . . I 'read' a report where a very small dose of lsd (lioke 50 mics or less) overdosed and overwhelmed three experianced psychonauts after an 18 mg 2ct21 experiance.

Yeah 5-meo-amt is about the shittiest drug if not given respect. Afoaf has accidentally been dosed just by working with it. It is very very absorbable. That really sucks about 2-ct-21. I thought it was gonna be the next mdma. All the trip reports report at low dosages seemed to give a pleasent "mdma like" expeirance. A freind remembers when all these "research" drugs started coming out. It was like the early sixties when one could just puchase lsd from a chemical company, or again with mdma. It was also a giant ticking clock until the pigs decided to get off their asses and do somthing. The only thing that held my freind back from going into buissness was the very fact that most of all the research chems are dose dependent. In some cases 1mg. can send people outta a great expeirance and into hell. Anybody who works with these chems has to have a mg. balance. And would have to make the dosages extreamly weak, so that people arn't sent to the hospital. No exception. But come on, if there are big enough dumbfucks out there that literaly stick their tounges into vials of research chemicals, don't they deserve what they get? Thats just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Nobady at no time in my existance could have ever gotten me to do that ever, its just too damn stupid. I guess people aren't mature enough to handle the responsability of having legal acces to drugs at their disposal. Again I'd still like to know the companies churning out multi kilo batches of these drugs, because you know they aren't sitting there synthing one gram at a time, and most of those drugs have a horribal yeild so....

What do you expect? DEA does an excellent job, the purpose of their existence is to fill prisons with people for possesing certain plants or powder, that's how the whole industry works. It is very profitable, just like other forms of war is. Majority of people more or less loose on that, but they are mental retards anyways, just show them some colours on TV and everythings is fine.

I can't understand people who get involved with drug-buisness in the u$a. He earned 100 000$ per month, did he expect that military-industrial complex would tolerate such money influx from sales of psychedelics, only because the compounds were not found on any schedule list? You must be quiet stupid to think so. Well, how clever, let's make the Chinese chemist make the stuff for me and I'll sell it to american morons for 200$/g, now his profit is added to those 2141 million dollars which are DEA budget for 2005 and his life is compleatly ruined. I remember visiting his homepage from a link posted at the hive, it was all covered with american flags and eagles, must have been quite a patriot.
