What would I get if I condensed nitromethane with benzaldehyde instead of nitroethane ?

Not true. Animal tests show it is only amphetamine-like in the presence of monoaminooxidase inhibitors. Otherwise it is as good as inactive. From PIHKAL, PEA:
Quote:
QUALITATIVE COMMENTS:
(with 200, 400, 800 and 1600 mg) No effects.
(with 500 mg) No effects.
(with 800 and 1600 mg) No effects.
(with 25 and 50 mg i.v.) No effects.

For some reason however it is a useful precursor for the opioid freaks.

The active conponents of chocolate are the xantine alkaloids, mostly theobromine, all other speculations are mostly some stupid comercial promotions to sell more chocolate and definitively have no pharmacological background.

Yeah, chocolate works for me too, everytime. 100% no placebo... Mr. Green
(seriously: maybe it has something to do with your MAOI experiments?)

Quote:
"Phenethylamine is found throughout nature, in both plants and animals. It is the end product of phenylalanine in the putrefaction of tissue. One of its most popularized occurrences has been as a major component of chocolate, and it has hit the Sunday Supplements as the love-sickness chemical. Those falling out of love are compulsive chocolate eaters, trying to replenish and repair the body's loss of this compound--or so the myth goes. But this amine is voraciously metabolized to the apparently inactive compound phenylacetic acid, and to some tyramine as well. Both of these products are also normal components in the body."

(A.Shulgin, PiHKAL, entry #142: "PEA")

Not in chocolate? Dear doctor says otherwise... Laughing

And this article too..
Letter: Chocolate, beta-phenethylamine and migraine re-examined.
Nature. 1975 Sep 18;257(5523):256
Schweitzer JW, Friedhoff AJ, Schwartz R.

also you might take a look here:

And maybe the phenethylamine in (brown!) chocolate is not psychoactive; but its there and probably just inactive out of the same reason why pure phenethylamine is being inactive: they are both metabolized before entering the brain. Which is obviously not the case for our brain! Very Happy Laughing

Beta-phenethylamine itself is only active when smoked or snuffed not by injection nor by mouth. This explains why Shulgin found no activity. Both active methods are painful and possibly sensitise or otherwise damage the tissues they expose. The stimulation and euphoria produced are pleasant but mainly cerebral. Dose >100mg in a softhead gave noticeable euphoria for 30 minutes and some stimulation for two hours.

Can't that phenylethylamine be converted into phenylacetic acid some way ? Or am I getting my alpha and beta muddled up ?

Done a bit of research on the condensation of benzaldehyde and nitromethane and found a very interesting patent (US2146060)

This patent describes a method of making hydroxylamine hydrochloride and Mandelic acid.

Both these chemicals are useful to the clandestine chemist, mandelic acid as a route to phenylacetic acid and hydroxylamine hydrochloride for forming oximes that can be reduced to amines.

The patent, in brief :-

Benzaldehyde and Nitromethane condensation catalysed by potassium hydroxide in a suitable solvent such as toluene, this gives us the potassium salt of phenylnitroethanol.

The free nitro-alcohol is then obtained via acidification.

Phenylnitroethanol is then hydrolysed with hydrochloric acid in a sealed vessel at a temperature of 110c.

Through simple separation techniques Mandelic acid and Hydroxylamine hydrochloride are obtained.

Please read the patent for full details

phenethylamine, activated by the use of a MAO-B inhibitor (selegiline) did not produce effects anything like ----, in my opinion, the only passing similarity was an extension of the period of alertness. there may have been a hint of hypertension too. methedrine activity does not directly interact with phenethylamine activity, i don't know if human studies of this effect have been done. studies with spider monkeys has been done and 'intermittent recognition of -----like activity' was found at about 30mg/kg phenethylamine but a 30-fold increase in activity was found with complete (either 10 days selective or with a high unselective dose of selegiline, an IRREVERSIBLE MAOI - ie dangerous at unselective doses because of a two week recovery time of MAO) inhibition of MAO-B before dosing (parenterally). the informal one-off test done that i did on myself was with decomposed phenylalanine and although it kept me awake it was not actually like methedrine at all (and by the way, euphoria is reduced in cocaine, and seemingly in methedrine from unofficial testing, and more than likely with anything similar).

i don't think that there is any bioavailability whatsoever of the phenethylamine in chocolate anyway (except in the case of mao inhibition). theobromine is a nicer alkaloid (more euphoric) than caffeine, but there is significant caffeine in chocolate too.
