Well first off I have to say.. UTFSE.. other than that...

you can start from the imtermidiate GBL... and just basify it with either NaOH, KOH, or and base really... there is one from baking soda even.

Another methode is from using GABA... I dunno do some searchs...you can also oxidate butan-1,4-diol with some KMnO4 and CuSO4-5H20 ( search on Rhodiums page for a solvent free oxidation)... what else... hmm that is about it...

Oh you could try starting from GVL.. I dunno search..
