hi,

concerning oxidation of maleic and fumaric acid, one of
those gives meso-tartaric acid, the other one d,l-tartaric
acid (=racemate). which gives which? i need this to understand
an old text on the oxidation of piperinic acid.

the way i read the text it's:
fumaric gives meso
maleic gives racemate

but i'm not sureĀ   ::)  thx!

lugh

When oxidized with permagnate, fumaric gives racemic tartaric acid, and maleic gives meso-tartaric acid  :)
