production of sulfur monochloride S2Cl2

It is possible to produce S2Cl2 of high purity and correct bp continually in one step. To achieve this Cl2 is introduced into a vessel of molten sulfur, that is connected to a cooler and receiving flask. The whole process, introduction of chlorine and distillation of S2Cl2, happens under vacuum. To speed up the reaction I2, Fe or a metal salt, e.g. FeCl3 is added. The molten sulfur is kept at constant height in the vessel by addition of new sulfur. Vacuum and amount of chlorine gas are regulated so that light yellow S2Cl2, which is practically free of sulfur and lower boiling chlorination products, permanently distills over. Yield is nearly quantitative.
