Are steroids synthesized in home laboratories? I've never looked into their synthesis, but it seems pretty difficult - though, perhaps it isn't if you can find the right starting materials.

It's sure doable (as everything is ) but it's not the way it's normally done when people make it for business or personal use. They just order hormones powders from India/China and ''brew'' the injectable steroids themselves. Solvent is an oil-carrier, and you add benzyl alcohol as a preservative/anti-bacterial. Benzyl Benzoate is also added sometimes but I don't exactly remember why.

Industrially a good starting point for steroids synthesis are steroids sapogenins. Diosgenin comes to mind. I don't think total synthesis would be viable economically considering the complexity of the molecules. Quite a few chiral centers as well.
