Silk Road's Fate
« on: June 08, 2011, 07:01:55 AM »
You would think that after lurking around SR for a few months, I should have interpreted yesterday's crackdown report as an impetus to go ahead and register in case, you know, they closed registration. :-\

Does anyone know what they plan to do from here, to keep registration closed or switch to an invite system, etc?

I'll just say that there are MANY other sites just like the one that was mentioned in the article. I wouldn't consider them safe. The typical operation is a pump and dump. They work the boards for 2-3 months while driving around the state using different post offices for the shipments. Then after x amount of time or a properly large order comes in and they take the money and run. A few weeks alter they start up again. New name, new "state". This is the same group of guys that has been doing this for years. (Hint they used to run one of the vendor confirmation boards that is now defunct.) I'm sure there are some legitimate people out there but I can say for a fact that there is a group of scam artists that have been working those boards for a long time.

^These boards are all from different people. They do tend to shut down eventually and all the members move to another place. Most are not scams although some have been run by scammers. I'd really recommend staying off the SR because reverse stings will eventually follow. Would be OK to sell there, not buy anything at this point. Better off getting an account at OVDB where known people are involved.

It depends on the quality of the board.  Certainly some are fly by night operations.  But I'm part of a private forum that has been going strong for 4 years now.  Trusted sellers (and buyers), mostly domestic, etc.

timecube, as of now, registration is closed until further notice.  ;D glad I could join this community. Also, very few scammers as of 5/30/11.

It may not be completely appropriate to ask here, but how does one get in the good graces of the more discreet (than silk road) trading forums?

The bitcoin forum can also be revealing, as well as the twitter/facebook pages of it and related things...

Sounds like a lot of stuff is happening with that community...

theres been no proof of that bust.  no news articles.  most informed spectators believe its a hoax, perhaps orchestrated by the gov't to ruin SR's credibility.

Really? That's interesting. Has there been discussion of this story elsewhere on the internets?

I was thinking it was spooky they had found the server - might not be true...

Might be the silk road people - making it sound like it was taken down would probably disinterest most people, so it wouldn't be plagued with unwanted members, and also make it less likely someone would try to pursue them and actually take them down -- though, that may be wishful thinking.

It would be counterproductive for SR insiders to propagate such a story, because it would disproportionately drive off the more discretionary and web-savvy people, and may attract more narcs to the site on rumours of a successful bust. The most problematic set of members are the buyers who know little about the culture and who join thinking that bitcoin is untraceable and that every seller is legit.

OTOH, I have no idea why that person posted it as an untitled entry on pastebin. He could have posted it on one of the bigger drug forums where it would be more widely circulated. It was only by chance that I discovered it by googling pastebin for references to silk road.

The server is still safe  ;) and The only bust that has happened was from a vendor doing a shitty job on packaging, the post grabbed that package and the buyer never got the drugs. That story from pastebin is believable to some extent, but nothing to worry about. Sting Ops are always possible, always follow the guidelines.

i ordered many steroids and drugs in the mail.
letter mail domestic is never a problem there is just too much of it to screen.
letter mail from thailand weighing 40 grams might attract some suspicion.
usually if the amount of drugs are small the drugs are seized and the recipient is sent a forfeiture notice to which he can respond to if he so wishes (i don't recommend that)
some people have stacks of these letters.
the simple truth is: if it is an insignificant amount it is'nt worth thier time.
there are overzealous postal inspectors however, so this is'nt always the case.
