Formating reference section.
« on: September 01, 2009, 04:27:24 PM »
Since recently the Reference section has been gaining more momentum then before I would like if all those with access to the articals to please post your ideas on how we can improve this section and make the format for the request easier to find for all of you such as things like the DOI and simular information. Once we have come to an agreement as to how request should be presented I can remove this threed and will make it a sticky at the top in an attempt to retain order amongst this section.

Thanks in advance for your help,
~Sedit

edit: How's that, Mr. Murphy :)
Wonderful!  ;D

Thx for editing and cleaning up this thread! Very much appreciated!

A suggestion:
Requests should be marked at the very beginning of each post with the note "REQUEST ##", ## being sequential numbering. People just have to look out what the last number was and increase it by 1.
Responses should be marked similarly, as "RESPONSE ##", ## being the same (!) number like the request.

That should make it foolproof to identify the respective responses. If there is more than one paper requested per post, number them like "REQUEST 5a", "5b", etc.

Maybe split it up into the various categories of what people might be searching for later on? That used by Rhodium on his page seems to work quite well, it would simply allow people to check back and find an article they vaguely remember, without having to re-request it...

It would also allow for people to check the listing to see if the article they are about to request is already there...

I would suggest the following (as already said in the Ref Request Thread):

Requests should look like this:

REQUEST 001:

Titel: "How to obtain LSD out of Horse Shit on Multi Kilogram Scale"
Bibliography: Journal of Mighty Mumbo Jumbo 2006, 10(3), p.123
PubMed-ID: 123456
DOI: 10.1000/JMmumjum.2006.10-123

The respective response should look like:

RESPONSE 001

(don't write anything here but just upload the respective .pdf)

Apart from this, I'd recommend to post each request in a separate post. How to avoid double-posts is a completely different question again...
In any case, please provide either the DOI or the PubMed-ID. Usually, I totally lose my desire to help out if I have to search the article completely on my own. If somebody really wants a ref, it shouldn't be too complicated to perform some searching on his own and provide these numbers.

Peace! - Murphy

Please lets try to stay on topic for once as I feel this is a subject that needs attending to in order to set some ground rules for the reference section.

Sorry about that. As for the method  Mr. Murphy posted, it seems legit. I'm just not sure what a DOI and a PubMed ID are. Maybe a sticky on finding this?

Good point. Seeing how it wont be too long away, when Ill be able to help out somewhat,(and I know I thoughtlessly requested something out of excitement and limited info myself etc) but I agree with Mr Murphy, as it is harder without the doi. yet sometimes one can see things cited and not this info enclosed, but yeah I am in agreement that some sort of standard REQUEST should be stickied, or whatnot. Maybe it could include finding doi numbers from titles..

I would like to get everyones take on this as I feel it would greatly improve the reference request threed and make it easy to determine what request have been fulfilled.

What my thoughts are is that after a request is filled I want to go back and delete the request and leave the file that was provided. This will prevent cluttering of the threed and it will be easy to tell what have not been fulfilled yet because only unfulfilled request will be all thats left.

@Agent
The DOI number can be found when you look at the abstract page of almost any artical. It will day DOI:1234567 ect..

I would be ok with that, if you want to do all of that work.
The title of the requested document should also probably be the name of the thread, with each request having its own thread, right?

Well not really. I was just thinking of doing this in the Reference Request threed. It will stop it from quickly becomming a 40 page threed and allow one to browse thru the various papers with ease. Also if you see a request it means that no one has fulfilled it yet. As long as the post is marked REQUEST. it would allow finding and fullfilling them to be a snap. Many times due to the large nature of request threeds you will see quite often request go unnoticed as other request pour in and it gets buried.

I am currently performing the action. Its best I do so now before it gets alot larger. The initial effort is going to be the only semi hard part but it should compress and clean the reference request threed in half if not more. Thank yous and such will also be removed along with other other small comments in an attempt to make the threed clean as possible. From now on if anyone has suggestions on matters involving the structure of the threed then all suggestions should be directed here.

When i fist started posting references for bees Rhodium gave some advice.......if you're going to provide a reference why not make it look good ,interesting and with some info on the article....thereby providing the reference requested and making it interesting and informative so others may download it and read it ...namely create an interest in reading articles .......and so, i have been using the format ever since,  it takes time but it's more informative and it allows for it to be fond when searching for it, one suggestion would be to remove the requests once they have been acquired and save the thank you stuff for the mail.....at SM the threads get large and often shut down and new one is started but the old one continues with all the acquired references still in the data base.....so members should use the search engine before requesting a file which may already be in the data base.....my suggestion and comments.....solo

Right you are java, the more interesting it sounds the better chances of someone full filling it as well.

Im going to quote this since im trying to clear out the threed now and this is something I want to add to the sticky im making since it will help some people.

Quote
ps: I found this link, that you can check your found doi numbers,    http://dx.doi.org/
In fact, I have got a DOI numbers from a journal article direct, and thought that would be fine, and just now plugged them in, and NO article, so this will no doubt refine, and make sure the doi is in fact CORRECT hence make it easier for whoever is doing the searching....

Since I am going to be the one keeping tabs on the reference thread trying to make it all data and no bullshit I would like to ask all those asking for references to do each on in a seperate post instead of single post containing multiple request. Doing this will allow me to delete the request with ease once someone has provided the paper.

Also to all those filling the request. Where as its not as big of a deal since you have already done enough and we appreciate that to the fullest if possible include a quote of the requested post in your fulfillment post. Javas fills are a prime example of how I would love things done. Its not required but just a suggestion to make my hectic life a bit easier.

My main goal all in all is to keep the request threed as short as possible while still providing as much material for both the search engine and the reader as possible.

Thank you for all your help,
~Sedit

Is it possible to open a discussion on where to put the ref's from the reference request thread? It is beginning to grow alarmingly and I was wondering if we could split it up - maybe, for example, opiate related references, broken up into precursors, procedures, morphinan's, fentanyl's, etc., then cocaine related references, broken into precursors, SAR studies, procedures, etc.?

Maybe the mods could do that when they respond to the request (I mean, they already delete the request as it is)?

It would just allow for better access to the collected knowledge base, things would be organized properly and theoretically not requested twice (I know, I am probably more guilty of this than anyone :-X)

UTFSE-  the titles of the articles are preserved  inthe reference section so they can e found if people look.....
now to catagorize and file the references ...like the rhodium archives will require more time and being able to
assign the reference to a particular function or procedure......this require work and reading every reference to
make that determination.....hence i choose to post the whole reference info an abstracts to guide the reader.

Unlike many posters at sciencemadness the way they provide the references makes them available only
to the requestee and forever unavailable for the FSE to locate and allow for it to be used again....
.again assuming our search engine will locate articles by posting the title or author.......It'a a good idea but
I certainly don't want to volunteer to such an undertaking just so things are nifty and easy to acquire...as it is
references here are acquired readily so I really don't see the the need ......unless someone wishes to do it then
......forward.....java

I have brief periods in time where my Bipolar is kicking in and I could spend days on end performing a task like this with little to no sleep. Perhaps sometime in the future I will undertake organization of all of this. If I could identify the folder containing the references on the host here It would make my job easier and I could organize them simular to a Rhodium style archive which is something I been wanting to do for a while as a needed addition to my site.
