Vespiary Book Club
« on: June 25, 2010, 03:27:30 PM »
I was thinking it might make a nice addition if we had a Vespiary book club. Just a thread where we can post book titles that may of interest to others and maybe have a bit of discussion on the books posted. I picked the reference thread because I suppose I would prefer to see the discussion of high quality publications related to the Vespiary's main aims rather than lower quality publications and fiction which this thread may invite if it were placed originally in the den of iniquity but the mods can decide if I am wrong on this.

I often surprise myself with my ignorance of some of the great books within this particular branch of science and equally importantly my ignorance of some of its great contributors and I may not be alone in this. It was scary how long I went without ever reading any of the works of R.E Schultes. Also since there are many books available in this section it may be interesting to discuss them and point out shortcomings, errors, and excellence where it occurs. It would probably still be best to upload any materials in the other thread.

Id really like to see what you all think and can recommend from reference books to the "must read" books like TIHKAL, PIHKAL etc. I would also be interested to see any older and more obscure books brought to light as I find it terrible to think of all the knowledge we have simply let decay on shelves or considered obsolete even though the synthetic paths and precursors still work as well as they did when the books were printed.

So I guess I may as well start with an obvious suggestion

One that is available here and is definitely worth the read is Ott's Pharmacotheon which is worth reading for the references alone and suggests some obscure botanical sources for many chemicals of interest. It may be dated in some instances with respect to the law but its everyone's responsibility to take care of their own legal standing anyway. The historical section with regard to the US governments war on drugs is also very interesting.

Pharmacotheon Jonathon OTT.

I agree. This is good.

I have books to idea for offer.

Otto Snow: Oxy (Big trouble in Russian Federation to have this.)
Pihkal from A. and A. Shulgin  (Be afraid of tetranitromethane because it is bad and it will kill you)
Tihkal from A. and A. Shulgin

Vogel's Practical Organic Chemistry
Brauer's Preparative Inorganic Chemistry
Zubrick's Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual

March's Advanced Organic Chemistry: Reactions Mechanisms and Structure

I haven't read Brauer's book but I own copies of all the others. I will download it from scribd since there is a copy there.

March's book is fairly good and is worth getting for the references alone.

A nice read is R.E Schultes and Albert Hofmann's book The Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens. It can be difficult to come by due to its age and I suggest going for the second edition but its a nice introduction to ethnobotany from two masters with some lovely pictures and photographs albeit in black and white.

A definite must have is the Encyclopedia of Psychoactive plants by Christian Ratsch.  This is the best book describing botanicals that I have come across and has a wealth of information on hundreds of plant and fungal species that contain psychoactive substances. There are also notes on the chemical composition of active moieties and notes on dosage preparation and on the cultivation of the plants.

This is an excellent book:
Reactions and Syntheses: In the Organic Chemistry Laboratory [Paperback]
Lutz F. Tietze (Author), Theophil Eicher (Author), Ulf Diederichsen (Author), Andreas Speicher (Author)

, the only version i found is this in german:http://ifile.it/1vlz5fr

A book that would interest me is "Plants From Test Tubes: An Introduction to Micropropagation" has anyone read this, and if so, is it any good? if it is available in .pdf, or other format, I'd love to see it.

Here it is vesp... not a bad read actually. Some fairly practical info on micropropagation.

It is something I have always been interested in and I have a few other paperbacks on the subject that I may get around to scanning if there is the interest.

Yeah, thank you very much. It looks so useful, I'll have to try to put it to practice sometime soon.

Cheers Lugh, I'm not sure my copy would have remained intact if it went through a scanner since the spine is barely holding together.

What I do have a copy of is Psychedelic Medicine which is a very interesting read but is fairly heavy going which I will get around to scanning and uploading since its still quite expensive to buy. Magnificent references too.

@ Poseidon. Thanks for the German books, my German is poor and I'm out of practice but I can make my way through them slowly. p.s. love the quote from JJ.

Thank you very much, you rock!

Edit: Salicylic acid is such an amazing plant hormone! So cheap, so effective, so little is needed and easily applied.
