Computer Section?
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:26:43 AM »
We currently have the "Law & Security" forum that is meant to "Discuss the laws of your country and related topics, such as security and privacy." It often discusses if certain chemicals are legal in other countries, computer security, and other technical things.

I am wondering if it would be a good idea to consider making a FULL up Computer Science section to the forum?

This would discuss everything from setting up servers, bitcoin, silkroads,

Pros/Arguments for it:
*A lot of people who are interested in chemistry, drugs, and other users on this site also share a common interest with computer security, cryptography, hacking, online anonymity, programming,  and other computer related technologies that would be discussed.
*Computer science relates to the general focus of this site which is helping individualsundermine the oppressive war on drugs learn stuff and share ideas with like minded individuals.
* This section would make users more aware of the technology they use, and they would be able to properly use it, and understand its limitations, etc..

Cons/Arguments against it:
*It isn't really related to the main sites goal - which has been previously stated as  aiming  "to spread, produce, and confirm information about the synthesis, extraction, sources and biological activity of various chemicals."
*Adding multiple sections will eventually make this site a "jack of all trades & master of none"
*Might draw unwanted attention?

I would like for members to suggest more pro's and con's of it, and consider the main focus this "computer science" section would have? I doubt we'd be discussing much about the Babbage machine, so it probably needs a better name than just "Computer science" and a good description to emphasize its main focus -- which I think would be using and creating technology for dissenting individuals and groups from excessively oppressive government regimes?

**Just an idea I am considering - I may or may not do it, or ever act on it... I just want other peoples in put, and see how much interest it actually creates or whatever... There is a lot of stuff we could discuss; Wireless mesh networking (darknet, anyone?), Bitcoin, Tor, I2P, FCON (Freenet in general, I just like FCON the best!), cryptography, security issues of common software, Hinternet, solidcoin, ixcoin and i0coin etc, etc.....

Please note you can change your vote, since people can present ideas that might change your mind - and you can also view the results before you vote - but don't let popular opinion pursue you instead...you can try to pursue popular opinion. ;)

Yes please. I rounded up the security forum over at the Lyc back when and this seems like a necessity to me, personally.

Glad to hear your input - any issues arise from the lyc forum that were not foreseen until that section was implemented?

Also.. is the lyc forum still up and running? I haven't looked for it in a long time but I do remember it was having issues a while back..

Oh yeah, it's back. Forums.lycaeum.org.

Well, it's just that the forums regarding law & related issues became shot through with a lot of computer security issues. So many that it seemed some house cleaning was definitely in order and I'm glad we did it.

It was a primary forum of its own for a long time until some shifts in moderation and administration decided it should just be a child board, however it still gets some use. :)

It's down ATM.  ???

I think it's important to remain focused. I think the lyc kind of splintered a lot, and changed some because of it. Maybe not entirely a bad thing, but if we want to maintain specific objectives it's vital to a degree of care when choosing new topics. There is a temptation in generating a great deal of enthusiasm whenever a new topic is suggested.

But I do see the advantages, and perhaps a "computer security" subsection would be more appropriate.

It works for me - but I forgot my password so whatever.. :P
But you make a great point about my main concern! Perhaps just a re-phrasal of the Law & Security forum to be more promoting of Computer related topics would be the best option.

Totally. That's the direction we were going with it originally also. I miss my co-mod.  :-[

I would like to see...

Computer Section
Computer Section > Internet News & Exploits
Computer Section > Security
Computer Section > Security > Privacy and Anonymity

I don't want to build multiple subforums/forums  -- so perhaps those can just be topics/sticky threads, and just a Computer section.

I think the computer section would mostly be focused on Security - and would likely be named Computer Security, but could still have News & exploits discussed, as it is very much related to security, etc..

I'd personally like to see "Electronic Security", covering both comp & other electronics.

I'm an electronics geek and I got my engineering degree in the field solely because I started helping a friend build & sell surveillance equipment back in the 90's.

My latest FM transmitter fits on Lincoln's head... of a penny.  8)

I'm building a detector right now.

Next I should probably work on a miniaturized video bug.

:D I like it! I'll consider it for sure... you should post tek and diagram of this stuff anyways... looks awesome!
I almost made one... but couldn't really justify it.

I'm using the Maxim 2605 - 2609 series FM transmitter chips for testing right now...

BTW: The company will send you some of these for free for testing purposes.....  8)

My older design was roughly drafted from this outline in multisim

The Maxim version IDK yet. The older designs I'd get up to a mile on my car's FM deck. I'll post those later... gotta run!

I think developing these aspect you mention vesp, are VERY valid. As mentioned, "electronic security" is becoming more and more relevant in todays world, and to be able to come here and learn from the many great minds here, on this subject, would be wonderful. 8)

Ah, btw not being picky or anything, but your first post has the 'cons' listed as 'for',  :)

God, I should clean these up...

The oldest, longest range, transistor amp variant

The 741 variant, 1/2 mile plus range, but output is 180 out of phase. Maxim chips shown for future use..

*Fixed typo in original post.

Thanks for the input, and voting! :)

Anything else anyone might have to add?

Anymore arguments against it? I'd like to hear them.

Surveillance. That's what got me into electronics to begin with. An engineering friend of mine started me helping him build surveillance gear when I was a kid and I went to school to learn what I was doing.

Aaahhh the Dark Arts!  jon has had some interesting surveillance experiences lol, actually, come to think about it, so have I, eep! thankfully that was long ago, although these days,in the city, as soon as you walk into the street, your on camera probably 90% of the time! :o

You dont "work for" (read Are Not) LE are you?

Not that I mind, but hey, lets be realistic here! ;D

anyway, bulgarians are an exception from my pov ::)

so, er, what DO you (or the people who want them) use them for? I can imagine many reasons, so make it good ;D

cheers
