It is time for me to pass the torch.
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:00:06 AM »
I am too busy with other things in my life, am losing, or have lost interest in drug chemistry, and cannot up keep this site going, operating, and moderated to the extent that I would like.

I still love this site, but simply put: My passion and time is limited and I'm focusing on another "vesp" adventure.

I would like to do the following:
1. Transfer this site to someone else.
2. Remain here as a subordinate admin, that takes a seat below whoever receives this site.
3. Sell this original acrylic painting:

4. Keep a balance of powers between similar sites. I.e I do not want those who control and own the collective, wet dreams, sciencemadness, etc to control this site. I believe by having someone else own this site will create plans by the many, and not by the few - encouraging innovation and helping to keep this culture alive. Additionally, if one of them fails, or goes to a jail, etc.. I less sites will fall.

The person who gets control of this site, should hopefully have ALL of the following abilities:
1. Long term respected member of the community, or at least a community.
2. Experience as a moderator, or admin of another site.
3. The ability to program.
4. DOES NOT do anything illegal! If you sell, make, distribute, or are involved with any illegal materials, or are a criminal hacker you jeopardize the site, the culture, the members, etc.

4. Promises to do, or to add the following features:
-> Remove all user logging info.
-> Fix that TOR problem.
-> Release an HTML version of this site, on The Pirate Bay, etc - after scrubbing usernames. (Not all info should be released)
-> Release uploaded files onto the darknet, or The Pirate Bay, etc.
-> Be able to afford the hosting, which is pretty damn cheap.
-> A decent amount of free time.
-> ??? (if I think of other things)
-> general site upkeep, update the software, watch and fix problems.
-> listen to concerns of the people, have humility, be able to go against the general opinion of the people, but to take the time to fully understand their concerns, ideas, etc.
->Able to handle scary events, stress, and other issues fairly well.

5. Unless appropriate, never remove me as an Admin. I won't do much, and I won't fight you, but I love this site and I believe I can help keep it going if anything bad happens to you, and you will be able to keep it going without me.

6. Please suggest other qualities of an Admin. I am already requesting things I am not - but it is unlikely we'll find the perfect user (all my previous people I would have chosen are in legal trouble - so lets emphasize the importance of #4!)

Feel free to offer, or better yet - suggest users who you might like to become admins. It will eventually be up for a vote, but I will make the final decision, that may not reflect the vote.

I am not sure when this will happen, I need to hear what a lot of people think, and have to say.

As for selling the painting, I've had pretty decent offers before - but I don't know the interest in it now. I'm hoping to get a good amount out of it to help fund my other project, but if not,  I suppose I may not sell it.

Would be happy, if not prefer to sell it for bitcoins. :) That would be a fun and nice way to see the painting leave me.

.......why not leave the site to a co-0p type administration, leave it to the people who actually have worked to make the forum what it is.....no one person should own the forum ...too many have made the mistake and chaos have resulted. History of the Synthetika, the Hive, the royal chemical society and others where the mindset of one person destroyed the work of its members .....all because of ego an a singular way of guiding a forum.   The forum belongs to the members who have added their grain to build it....and to the thankless job of moderators that keep order....so my humble  opinion has been stated........java

Thank you so far Vesp. It's a great community you got going :)

I think Java makes a relevant point, but Co-Ops can get messy if admins and mods don't agree. Just playing devils advocate.

Whoever it goes to I wish them luck and support them as it affects us all and this is a great little community.

PS: That painting is quite the beauty. Must have taken a skilled artist with lots of patience. Honey to the artist.

What a post to read in the morning.

Sorry to hear you wish to move on, Vesp. But things in life change and it is completely understandable. I wish you the best in all your endeavors, may you succeed and gain much satisfaction from everything you go after.

I want that painting. Just saying.

I will consider what java has said. I have concern with giving multiple people access over it. Didn't huge problems arise and a power struggle come about with wet dreams, the collective, and something else? That seemed to divide the community and the content.

I'm not sure when this will all happen but I no longer feel I am fit enough to control the site.

PM me if you want the painting. It is framed and everything. Offer a price, and I'll share what the going auction price is or whatever.

I could still also try to keep the site but I feel I haven't been around enough to justify it. I might get some sort of a spark of interest back in it again but probably not. Though come spring I so always get interested in growing plants and fungi.
Though, now I am planning more so on breeding axolotls and tiger Salamanders. :P
Along with a marketplace/start up I am working on.

.......personaly, i've been around the clandestine chemistry forums for 11 years and never hungered for control, .....it was one person at WD controlling it when the moderating group sought control, as to the politics, well dictatorships aren't good , so it happened to Synthetika with Hellman where he lost control when the membership walked out on him...and the Royal Society, where V16 just closed shop and walked out with the data base.....

.I don' t know the answer,  however Andy found a way  at the zonez, he enpower his moderators and gave them all administrator privilages and there is no power struggle there,  however I would copy my favorite threads or make a mirror,  in this period of transition or the end of the forum......java

I think the last thing anyone want's hear is the loss of any of fantastic info and experiences which have been built up here over the years. It should be relatively straight forward for someone to create a script which creates an anonymised backup of the site's posts along with the public attachments and images. This could be distributed as a torrent every couple of month so at least there will never be a situation like the hive where it ups an disappears from the net one day with a loss of all the work but in by the members.

I like the idea of having a strong moderator team, but it is probably still necessary to have one admin who could make final decisions. I can understand your reasons Vesp, but it might be best for your to take a hands of the day to day running and maintenance of the site with admin responsibility and hosting etc given to the new admins but still keep ultimate control. You probably know better than anyone how to maintain this fantastic community which you have built up over the past few years.

Polonium might have suggested the best option.

A script like that would be great. I am however incapable of making it.
Would be great if it could make a copy of the sites content, clear out usernames (possibly in the comments as well?) and even site name. And backup attachments ready to be shared via the pirate bay.

Unfortunately, I'm NOT a candidate as I'm time poor myself.

I'll send you the scripting (when I find it) that was used at The Collective.

...well the I guess its time for nominations.......how about Organikum, he's been around a long time .......I guess we have to see if he's interested. As posted Wizard X is poor in the area of free time, I hope you consider a long time member of the community, my self excluded from consideration as I too am poor in the area of free time.

I hope this can be resolved with a smooth transition.....I hate politics, and the mess they create,....I don't know how this will work, who will pay for the service ?....as done at Sciencemadness, contributions should be welcomed for the costs involved hence no strain on the new administrator, or if you will be a tenured administrator will you continue to absorb the costs involved maintaining the forum .....questions that need answers......java

I think what I might do is give even more power to the moderators, put someone in charge of most decisions, and get someone to help program wanted/needed features but then continue to have ultimate control over the site.

I will see what other powers I can give to the moderators I suppose.

What this site really needs more than anything is someone who can program and be trusted with editing the sites software and having access to potentially sensitive information.

I won't be hardly active, but I think it will help improve the over all quality of the site as I will be delegating most all of the responsibilities.

I will continue to pay for everything.

I think I am going to keep the site for a while longer. But I feel unfit as the admin and ultimate controller of the site.

Yes it is framed, and the dimensions are 16 by 20.

I am not sure of the amount. I've been offered around $2,000 dollars for it - but I'm not sure if that's too high, or too low or whatever. I'd like to get as much money as I can out of the picture because not only do I need money more than ever at this point - but fucking paypal has froze my remaining money for 180 days.

Also I've decided I am going to help this friend of mine get some EMDR treatments for her PTSD.
My first option is to try to beg money from churches (I'm atheist, she's atheist... not sure how well that'll work! LOL)but if all fails I'll just pay for it myself. But obviously, I'd much prefer to spend the Mormon Churches money and not my own. :P

Would accept paypal or bitcoin as payments.

Hmmm Not sure what else! feel free to message me about whatever. I'll try to provide as much info about it as possible.

Also... kinda considering selling full sized prints of it on board that are also framed to raise money, but I'm not sure if that would be worth the effort involved.
Art doesn't sell totally well.

Dont know if I could afford the original but would definitely pay 200 for a  framed large print in a frame.  also could anyone tell me how to make an archive of this site or how to store all the information on it?  even a link to a site that would guide me of how to do it would be nice.  I just dont want to lose all the goodies on this site.

Did you paint that yourself?
