General Site Matters Discussion Thread
« on: June 20, 2010, 10:10:58 AM »
I often have a few ideas that may or may not be worth making a thread over, often I will not make a thread on it -- I also know that a lot of members probably feel the same way, and maybe will not want to start a topic on how they personally think something could improve the site.

Making a General Site Matters Discussion Thread might be a wise idea to help get questions, ideas, and general things like that, which would generally be unmentioned. So I hope this thread can get more people to talk about the issues they are having,  and other matters involving the site.  This thread will be fairly similar to the Short Questions Thread, in the sense that there is no specific topic.

For starters....

I would like to get more activity in the pharmacology section -- what might I do to encourage that, and improve the section?

Also --as an FYI I am working on getting HTTPS and moving the site to better hosting that will allow more storage of files, etc. So... don't worry about HTTPS until we get it going.

I am working on making this site (after it gets moved) to hidden from google or other search engines, and especially the files on the FTP (which is down at the moment, but will be back up) and *hopefully* to be an accessible by members only sort of thing. This is due to (so far.. minor) issues involving copyright - I want to host as much information on our subjects as possible, but I do not want to jeopardize the site -- even if it means it is less useful.

Once the site gets HTTPS, the hosting will cost ~180 USD each year, and the only means of income I have is birthday and holiday money -- is there any chance we *might* be able to find a way to get donations for The Vespiary? Reguardless if can or cannot I will remain paying for it -- Its just painful to spend a decent amount of my money on it - and I know members here have offered to donate as well.
I will consider selling shrink wrapped prints on mat board of semi-psychedelic art and The Vespiary (the front page image) that is ready to frame to raise money for The Vespiary -- Obviously some serious security issues exist with both donations and the print idea -- So if we can't come up with an easy solution..  Oh well, and I will continue to pay, but for me at least it is worth looking into...

Anyways to get this thread started, let me know what you think about my post and do others have any ideas, concerns, or problems with the site currently, or predict any in the future?

The print idea might work but it would have to be through one of those 3rd party sites that do shirts/mugs/prints etc and realistically have no ties name or otherwise to this site. That way donations can be mixed in with general buys since I'm assuming from the front page its good art. I'm no expert by a long shot but would using self signed certificates provide the same level of security and be a lot cheaper?

with the hosting plan I have in mind, not really much of a difference as far as I know.

Yes a 3rd Party site is a good idea.

I can also contribute  once safety is taken care of.

How about western union? seems to work for all the scammers so it must be anonymous enough but I have never used it?

I would consider myself strong enough on Pharmacology (not saying anyone else should consider me so) what do you think it is missing... I was going to suggest a simple Do/Don't thread with the counter-intuitive pitfalls of posology etc. (i.e 2 tablets does not mean double the effect of one tablet, breaking a tablet in half does not necessarily mean half the effect.) They are pretty basic but the number of people I know who mess it up would seem to justify it.

That sounds interesting, I've never even heard of the term posology -- but in general, I don't really think anything is missing in the pharmacology section, other than activity - I just think that more activity in that section of the site would be a nice addition to the information here, as compared to The Den of Iniquity growing any larger - I assume it interests a decent amount of people here and so on.

I suppose it may not have as much "hands on" use or experience, but it sounds like it could -- the posology sounds at least somewhat  useful when trying to determine dosages on various substances.

Thank you for suggestion western union - I'm not really concerned about my own identity being concealed, but more so the people that donate, I figure that is there concern as well.  I'll look more into western union, as I haven't yet. Also I heard something that alertpay might work - it was described to me as being similar to paypal, but with less rules. Also, and I don't remember the source some russian paypal equivilent was supposed to be better to use than just normal paypal.

Made it so you need at least 10 posts to see/read/use the reference section on this forum. Also, I made it so the posts made in The Den of Iniquity doesn't count your posts -- this is due to boards no topic/off-topic and lightly moderated content.

I know there was some concerns when first formed over the child board of high explosives, I still have an issue with it because I think that it goes against what thevespiary stands for as being a contructive force other then a destructive one. The area is relatively dead anyway so would it be possible to merge this with the general chemistry and leave it at that? I have no gripe about the discussion of such substances but I feel seeing a child board for it on the main page sends the wrong message and makes us appear to be a bunch of drug making bomb making loopamaniacs.

Any thoughts?
There once were some bees and you took all there stuff!

That is something that has also bugged me, and I am in fact going to delete it and keep the posts in the vacuous post section - since, while they are some decent posts in there, it isn't really the chemistry we want to see around the board.

I will get to that when I have done other more important things.

I must agree with Sedit. The site will be better for it. Explosives are the S**M** area. The S**M** can have the trouble of explosive. This is not for here I think.

It has been removed, most sent to the vacuous post section, some that I felt had value was put into other chemistry - some completely deleted.

I was thinking how about a sub forum like they had on the old WD site. It was like a journal where you started your own thread and uploaded work, ideas, refs etc which didnt warrant a thread themselves but might inspire others. Basically you would only write in your own thread so others could see what you are working towards and thinking towards? Not quite prepublication but not quite rambling nonsense either? Any takers?

I am pretty much for that but I will need to think it over -- we have had in the past stuff similar to that such as "Vesp's Random Experiment Thread" and I believe other members had some similar.

I am not sure what category it should be in - since a lot of projects are not just chemistry, but involve biology, etc.

I think an additional subforum would be appropriate - however, I wonder if it would be used all that often?
What do others think? and would others post in a "journal" type thread?

I think I've made it so it isn't possible for users in general to view members profiles. I figured there wasn't a need.. I could be wrong, but whats there to see on a profile?

Why do you want to view members profiles?

Sometimes you want to find all of a users posts... but from a security standpoint I really like not being able to do this.

Oh the posts is a useful thing, I did not think of that..
Hmm well, it isn't like the email is revealed if default settings were not changed, and additionally the email can be changed to one that isn't even real - once you've activated your account.

Finding all posts by a user is what I was thinking of as well.  As far as security is concerned, there are much bigger issues at large than being able to see someones profile.  It really doesn't provide any risk that I can think of.  The way I look at it, I wouldn't register here with an e-mail address that I would be uncomfortable giving to the feds.  I'm obviously not going to use my uni acct.  Better safe than sorry.

Does anyone have an interest in a forensic science subforum for the law and order forum? I have quite a few articles of interest that do not seem to fit in anywhere else. If it isnt interesting enough I can just post these in the regular law and order forum I guess.
