Is it okay to start topics and post write ups of some of my experiments even though they seem simple to most? ie haloform reaction, distilling hooch ect ect

Absolutely!

Thanks. I am halo-forming right now. I got this really cool leather bound book from barnes and noble and am teaching myself how to take notes as well as per Zubrick's instruction.

As far as OTC DCM seperation goes I usually just add excess water distill out the DCM and redistill it with MgSO4.

.....have been pondering on the Cleisen Rearrangement  of c6h5-ch2-ch2-(0-ch3) , following the rearrangement  it would make phenylacetone.......it's a question not a fact and what would the ether be called.......java

o-Allylphenol I believe

maybe me confused, I thought the reagant was an allyl phenyl ether that would then result in what I said via a claissen rearrangement.

Two questions please. Do you guys put ice in the water that circulates through your condenser? I did and it makes a mess with all the condensate dripping on table.  Is it as simple as adding iodine to propanone to make iodoform?

Woleans website gives detailed instructures on making iodoform so its work a look. I love the idea that it decomposes and subliminates I2 on warming producing clean dry iodine. Something I had my eye on for a while.

IIRC (been a while since I looked into it)Its a matter of taking the normal acetone/NaOCl synthesis for chloroform and adding I2 to a NaOH solution and dripping the Acetone in to yeild a precipitate of iodoform. Iodoform is a solid BTW unlike chloroform.

Can anyone please suggest a good replacement for P205 for drying ethyl acetate well enough for use in a claisen condensation? Not carbonates, dont cut it.

cheers.

Listed drying agents would be K2CO3, P2O5, Na2SO4, calcium hydride, 4A molecular sieve. Should swim assume 3A sieves would also do the job? A distillation just before use and 30min drying with one of the previous agents should be good enough but swim hasn't tried this.

Hi -- did anyone ever determine the easiest way to go about turning N-acetyl-4-aminophenol (Tylenol, acetaminophen, paracetamol, etc ) into hydroquinone? I believe I had read somewhere that it was possible with only the use of sulfuric acid, leading the aminophenol to hydrolize into hydroquinone and an ammonium sulfate -  but I cannot find a reference, and so this may be false. I do want to use nitrite on this, as I have little to none. What would happen if nitrate were used? Guesses?

i'm missing the post in my hive archive but there's a nice post by Antoncho called "Post 224004 (fructose: "route from acetaminophen (paracetamol)", Chemistry Discourse)" that seems to be MIA.  here's another related post, worth a glance but doesn't really answer your question as well as that Antoncho post probably does http://127.0.0.1/rhodium/Rhodium/hive/hiveboard/novel/000466801.html

You are studying Zubricks's you are doing correct. The rest is nonsense. You have done correct.

Has anyone had success with extracting Vanillin and Ethyl Vanillin from OTC sources using the bisulfate adduct?

How would I go about determining if a compound can be steam distilled (peferably through the use of math)?

To be basic about it its a function of the vapor pressures of the two substances being co-distilled together. In the case of essential oils its H2O and the oil. If there vapor pressures fall within a given range of each other they will modify each other vapor pressure and co-distill with each other as a zoatrope IIRC(don't quote me on this lst line please iv had a long day).

I hope that helps you find what you need because I have to head out and can't really get much more indepth on it right now but the science and mathmatics of it can be found and the information about should help you get there.

Thanks, that was what I thought I remembered. Still tryin to figure out the span of that range but at least I have the tools to solve the problem now.

ONe dumbass question

Ratio question.. 50:50 ratio of 90 = 45:45
so    70:30 ratio of 90 = what.    I am rushed and cant remember how to do it and it is really needed asap.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks big time, yeah its a dumbass ??, but Ive got exams for the next 3 days and sort of going blank all the time,(I just cant think) and just couldn't remember how to do it, and needed to know for statistics I am currently revising and started panicking, hence thought Id ask. Its a spin when I go blank, and Not sure what the cause is, Id imagine its pressure and stress one can put one self under at exam times. I need to chill..
